idk if youre still doing this but karen chen's turandot vs. shoma's turandot?
Yeah I’m still doing it. Gifset answer coming soon.
youre super super super intelligent and willing to explain basic things to me sometimes, also you sent me the magazine and i am forever grateful :D :D :D
Ahh that’s so nice of you to say :’) And it was my pleasure I’m always so happy to share my fortunes with y’all!!! <3
team assmaster
fave: jeremy abbott
least fave: nobody we all win and i have no least fave. except gracie, butt she is not on this team.
daisuke takahashi, akiko suzuki, mao asada :)
Wow, that’s a lot. I’m going in reverse order, from most difficult to easiest.
Mao:
What I like about him/her/them: She has a gorgeous lightness on the ice and lovely transitions between elements. Her triple axel, like all ladies’ triple axels, is badass, but it is the gentlest badass you will ever see. In interviews, she’s direct and self-assured to an extent that most Japanese women (and most women in general) are afraid to be, and she uses “jibun” instead of “watashi” to refer to herself because she is a gently badass feminist.
What I dislike about him/her/them: I find a lot of her programs boring and a lot of her costumes ugly. I get that it was packaging and marketing - the sweet little ballerina to contrast with Yuna’s take-no-prisoners athlete - but that marketing doesn’t resonate with me.
Favorite costume: Most of her costumes have way too much weird action in the boob area. The lavender dress she wore for her 2008-9 SP was no exception, but it’s more restrained and a lovely color.
Favorite competitive program: 2007-8 free skate to Chopin’s “Fantasie Impromptu.” It had spunk.
Favorite exhibition/show program: Does her ridiculous “A Whole New World” duet with Jeff Buttle count?
Favorite element/skill: Biellmann spin directly into a double axel directly into the end of her damn free skate.
*
Akiko:
What I like about him/her/them: What a classy, detail-oriented, snazzy little package of a grown-up skater. I don’t want to compare coming out as recovering from an eating disorder to coming out as queer, but in figure skating, both are taboo and can become traumatic even if they’re not career-ending. She skated with such joy, always a tremendous smile on her face, and showed delightful surprise and appreciation when she earned high scores. She’s encouraging to other skaters and a real team leader. I miss her.
What I dislike about him/her/them: Her technique was good but never spectacular. Boy, did she choose tired, irritating warhorses for her program music.
Favorite costume: Most of her costumes were thoughtful, original, and flattering, but my favorite is the gray dress with black leaves that she wore for her 2011-12 SP.
Favorite competitive program: Her “West Side Story” FS from 2010-11 suited her personality and style perfectly.
Favorite exhibition/show program: She’s not my favorite show skater, but her “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” program is very pretty.
Favorite element/skill: Her free leg position in her basic arabesques is flawless, in both her camel spins and her spiral sequences.
*
Daisuke:
What I like about him/her/them: He pushed the sport forward both athletically and artistically and set a high bar for Japanese men’s skating that his “little brothers” in the sport flat-out say they’re striving to live up to. He’s ridiculously flexible (even after the knee surgeries). He’s a natural dancer but also a studied one, knowledgeable about music and choreography. He could make overused music seem innovative and new. He should have won the 2010 Olympics, fall be damned, because his level of difficulty was insane and his transitions and artistry showed a higher level of giving a shit about the IJS than anyone else in Vancouver.
What I dislike about him/her/them: He often fell when I needed him to win and busted his knees so I’ll never get to see those sit spins again. In other words, like most men’s skaters I love, I have to watch him through my fingers while doing shots and crying.
Favorite costume: Cyber Swan.
Favorite competitive program: Cyber Swan. ALL THE CYBER SWANS FOREVER. Resistance is futile. We will add your diversity to our wearing feathers and hip-hop dancing and winning the SP by 17 points.
Favorite exhibition/show program: “Bachelorette” is fierce and intense, and an inspired music choice.
Favorite element/skill: His super-low sit spin, with both his butt and his free leg about a centimeter from the ice.
