Question of john smith : projector brightness for daytime use?
I am looking to buy a projector for my home and I was just wondering how bright of a projector I would need for daytime use. From looking at different projectors I have seen the brightness range from 20 lumen to 4600 lumen and I want to know which is right for me. I have a projector screen in my back room which has quite a few windows. I used to have an older sharp projector which really only worked during night but it broke so now I am looking for a new one. I also do not know the brightness of my last one so I have nothing to compare to. If anyone could let me know I would appreciate it.
Answer by agb90spruce Very few (no?) projectors look good in daylight, or even with significant ambient light … at least on a regular screen. There are special screens (for one example, see the link) that allow projectors to work well with ambient light, even in daylight, but they are expensive!. Many people say the inability to get a good picture in daylight makes a projector a poor choice relative to an HDTV. But even an LCD TV (Plasma TVs are usually less bright) with brightness turned up will have a somewhat washed out picture.
Bottom line is the better you can control light the better the picture (you kill contrast in a bright room). That said, a 2500+ lumens projector on a 80″-90″ screen should work OK in a fairly bright room.
