Jimmy Sheirgill Remembers the Surprising Offer from Gulzar for Maachis: "I Fell Off My Chair
In a recent interview with SCREEN, Jimmy Sheirgill reminisced about his early days in the industry and the unexpected turn of events that led to his acting debut in the 1996 film Maachis. Directed by Gulzar, the film, which starred Tabu, Chandrachur Singh, Om Puri, and others, was a critical and commercial success, earning two National Film Awards. However, for Sheirgill, the opportunity to act in the film came as a complete surprise.
During a conversation at the second edition of SCREEN LIVE with his Sikandar Ka Muqaddar co-stars Tamannaah Bhatia and Avinash Tiwary, Sheirgill recalled his early struggles. He shared that he initially went to Gulzar in hopes of securing a job as an assistant director, believing that one had to work as an AD for several years before landing an acting role. To his astonishment, Gulzar offered him a role in Maachis instead. So taken aback by the offer, Sheirgill jokingly recalled falling off his chair in disbelief. The casting choice was a surprise to many, including Sheirgill himself, but it marked the beginning of his successful acting career.
