UPDATED: A CATALAN’S THOUGHTS ON KING FELIPE’S SPEECH
Some of you might have seen this post from last night. I’ve had a few hours to cool off (I wrote it immediately after hearing the speech) and gather my thoughts since then, and I wanted to add something.
The main reason why his speech pissed me off so much was because I expected him to be neutral and conciliatroy. It was a given that he was going to be very critical about the referendum, but laying all the blame on the Catalan people was irresponsible and, to me, a very bad move on his part. Didn’t the almost 900 people injured on Sunday deserve a mention? Even a passing and ambigouos comment would’ve sufficed, but not condemning the brutality at all really tipped me over the edge. Just like president Rajoy and his court of liars, who called the violence ‘proportional’ and even ‘not tough enough’, this didn’t endear him to the Catalan population at all. In fact, it prompted more people to turn against him. They should’ve seen it coming. When Mariano Rajoy became president (2011) there were only 14 members of the Catalan Parliament who were pro-independece. Right now, there’s 72, the absolute majority.
The only thing their words have achieved around Catalonia and in many places in Spain, has been in turning more people in favour of the referendum, regardless of their political views. A few days ago, most people against independence would’ve said they weren’t going to vote because it was illegal. But look at these pictures from the past couple of days and see how things have changed. Sure, there’s many people against the referendum still, but many otheres want to vote and they aren’t going to give up now.
“I feel Spanish but today I’m ashamed”
“I’m not pro-independence but I can’t stay home while they attack my people”
I just love when Spanish people says that the independence movement started just 40 years ago.
Yeah, because before that we lived in a DICTATORSHIP.
People were arrested only for speaking in Catalan, Catalan people had to had their names translated into Spanish. What do the Spanish think that would have happened if the people went to the demonstrations on the independence of Spain back then?
We would all be dead.
And has to do with my desire to vote with that?
Is the desire for independence less legitimate, if hadn't started 200 years ago?
Spain has been bombarding Barcelona for more than 200 years, perhaps not for the independence, but for having different opinions.
And although the independence movement had begun yesterday, we don't have the right to vote for it?
If until a few weeks ago I was going to vote that No, I did not have the right to that, to want to remain united to Spain? Never has an independentist denied my right to vote no. But Spain has done that.
My desire for independence began yesterday, is not it legitimate then? I have no right to change my mind? I do not have the right to vote?
Apparently not in Spain, so now I'm an independentist.
1-0 Catalunya is not Spain
Ok, I know nobody cares much about this in this webside but since I’m a little nervous and the American prsident had the nerve to comment on this I’m going to say it anyway. Tomorrow, 1st of October my (soon to be or not) country, Catalunya, is holding a referendum, declared illegal by the central goverment of Spain, for the independance of my region. Why am I nervous? Because last time we did something like this there was a civil war that ended in fascism, and since there are thousands of policemen coming from the center of the country that will surely use force at the smallest provocation tomorrow is going to be a tense day for sure.
Regardless of anything tomorrow will be the begining of something. If by anything something happens, let it be known that we did this for democracy and the right of the people to decide their future and preserve their identity!
Good night, and good luck to everybody!
