As you can see, I don't really have everything planned in detail, I just have the basics down because I really want to explore more of him as I write! I really look forward to getting to know all of you and your amazing muses!
So Cyrus hails from Sydney, Australia. He doesn't know that he's one of the merfolk until he visits the island and takes a dip into those magical waters. He came to the island with his Mom for a little vacation like at the start of April 2023 but he gets more than he expected! Cue the whole transformation thing and his Mom says to him in a Hagrid voice "yer a merman, Cyrus." His parents and two older sisters, Cordelia and Pearl, are merfolk but for some reason Cyrus has never shown any merfolk traits and he grew up to be very wary of people because of what his family always tells him things like "They can be dangerous. You can't trust others. Blah blah blah stuff like that." There's a long story to this but I'll spare you the details for now. He currently lives at Eopshin Heights with his mother, he's a student at the university and a staff at the ice cream shop! He's really enthusiastic about working there so you can be sure to see his joyful face and his joyful service when you come in for some ice cream. Cyrus in general is just a really affable and sweet person to be around with, oh! and he's very curious. He probably asks tons of questions about anything and everything and everyone.

his memories from when he was younger are a little hazy. he doesn't remember much other than being in and out of several families for adoption, but never being able to stay long enough for it to stick feeling like a real family. everything just always feels off.. wrong to him, anywhere he goes. he also has no information about his birth family or where he came from, and when he's old enough, he's on his own as soon as he can be.
he does a lot of wandering, a lot of couch-surfing, here and there work and favors to keep him afloat. he's in a relationship that lasts the longest he's ever had anything- a few years, something he thinks may last a lifetime, and it ends abruptly, leaving hyeonju heartbroken and needing out.
having to get out, literally, as he's kicked out and finds nowhere else to go. he finds himself on a bus and lets it take him as far as he can until his money nearly runs out, and he lands on mabeob island. he had heard about the meteor showers before, and feeling lost, stays for enough time to wish on a falling star. and then he just.. doesn't leave.
maybe it's the fact that there's nothing else waiting for him, but there's something about the island that's familiar. and if there was a curtain over his eyes, it's slowly being lifted. ever since the meteor shower, he can see the red strings tied neatly around each person's ring finger, trailing in knotted anchors to the other side of their hearts, but his own hand, empty.
it comes to him in pieces. this island is more familiar than he thinks. one day, he's perusing fruit at the markets when an elderly women drops her basket and takes his face in her hands and starts to cry. and he doesn't know her, doesn't know the man behind her, either, but can see the strings tying their hands together.
it's his grandmother. there are pictures of him, here, before, as a child, and she explains how he had been taken away for his own safety. his mother, having fallen in love with his father despite the arranged marriage her parents had set forward for her, had hyeonju unexpectedly and left him in the care of his father's grandparents.
his father, heartbroken and throwing himself into work to handle not being able to be with the one that he loved, one day becomes lost at sea, a sailor of his own boat that sold fish in the markets. he still hasn't turned up to this day, but once his mother's grandmother had discovered hyeonju's existence still on the island- she ordered his mother to arrange him to leave to not be a distraction, as she had been visiting hyeonju in secret despite ending things with his father, and him becoming missing.
his memories had been taken from him of before, to somehow dissuade hyeonju from returning, yet he still found himself back, anyways, his own strings pulling him back to his roots. it's his grandmother that tells him of his magic and of how she suspects there was more that happened the night he was taken away, that she swears the spell his other grandmother cast on him to clear his memories did something else, too, to his magic, his identity.
it makes him think of his wish- of how he had only wanted to know what true love really was, if it even really existed, and why love had always been so hard for him to find. to keep. and looking down at his hands, untangled from any red strings to lead him to anyone, wonders if there's more there than he thinks. that his whole life, there had been more than just him, that maybe it wasn't all actually his fault.
it's not something he can easily unlearn. and meanwhile, learn more of himself, and his magic, and so he takes up a job at the library and spends his time reading up on anything he can get his hands on. lives at eopshin heights but often visits his grandparents at the outskirts, and slowly pieces his life together.
it's where he is now. after living so much of his life thinking he was human, and not knowing of so many pieces and finally getting memories, bits of it come back the longer he stays. all he wishes is for more understanding. to be able to believe, again, in all of the things he thought he had lost hope for. to get all of those answers he had always been seeking but never had been able to find.
tldr . hyeonju is a witch with a Lot of family baggage that he's just now starting to uncover, along with his magic and all of his memories slowly starting to come back, all of the perils he brought with him from seoul (no one will ever love me no one has ever loved me it must be My fault), and that he can now see everyone else's red strings but his own
and also where is his mom and grandmother and the rest of his extended family on that side . did they just Run after they decided the whole fate of his life and Probably was the reason he ended up like this anyways? are they hiding from him? did they make themselves hard to find?
he will keep reading his books and trying not to rot all of the grass underneath him when he lays down in it to breathe for a little while (that is Not him messing up patches of the forest.. that's so funny. fall came a little early this year. oops)
plots! i do have a plots page here but i'm open to just talking something out or putting our muses into whatever evil thing we can cook up if you want to just do something fun! but some quick ideas:
give him someone to go dancing with and forget everything for a little while, i think he would be really into the feeling of being in the dark and getting lost in the music, even if they Were just pretending for the fun of it (who they are what matters that everything is kind of Not okay but it feels okay in this moment here with you)
he is probably making too much of a ruckus above/below/beside your apartment and it's because he is singing and dancing to music and unaware of how loud he's being. yell at him or let him bring by some cookies as consolation later
he keeps seeing you around town and remembers that you have that one book overdue and he's just like. please give me the book back. ill pay you (he will probably just snatch it and run he has no money but please still give the book back the library is missing so many as it is)
he probably is at the beach a lot staring out at the water thinking about Life (and if his father is still out there. if he even knows about him) but maybe they have a habit of running into each other and just start having a Beach Book Club but the books are just that they talk about life and feelings and the ocean makes them feel a little better about it
really anything! friends or enemies or someone to drink with or carry home at night or bump into and turn it into a streak of Why are you always right in front of me when i am trying to go anywhere
you knew him when you were young and he's forgotten now but he really wants to remember you. keeps asking you to show him photos and take him places and eat the same ice cream you did on that afternoon and smell the same flowers to try and remember. maybe he did remember awhile ago and now he just likes spending time with you. someone to remind him that the love really is there and it really does matter (and he really does care)

Biography!!
Moved from Japan to Mabeob Island when she was still quite young so she basically has lived all her life there.Truth is it wasn’t something planned but her Cherry Blossom was brought by a japanese dignitary as a gift of goodwill between the two countries without the knowladge that she was bonded to it.
Fellow nature spirits that lived in the gardens were kind enough to look out for her, some even taking the roll of her mother. They became her family in Mabeob. (wanted connection!)
A curious little thing, Kura is a sweet girl, like the cherry blossoms the girl has a strong will yet her heart is as soft as petals. Something that was tested a lot while growing up and learning everything all over again in a different country, with a different language.
The florist at the gardens. The perfect combination of colorful flowers, their meanings, she knows them by heart. Her flower arrangements are always meaningful.

Curious fact: her hair tends to change to match her bonded tree. During spring when the cherry blossoms are blooming she has pink hair that starts getting darker until it becomes a red for summer when the flowers are drying, a brown color for the time when every flower and leaf had fallen and grayish during winter whenever it get’s covered by snow.

Sakura it’s not hard to approach, she is quite friendly with everyone and playful with those close to her yet there is a secret that only a few now and that muse figured her out. even if she masks it well, she is not as bright as she seems, what people say about her easily gets to her. she is not even sure how that happened or when it did, she only knows that they became her closest friend in mabeob, since then, they are the her go to person whenever she feels overwhelmed. they understand her struggle and ease her mind and heart. They are each other’s person

it is said on the streets of pelican town that the florist is seeing someone, they have seen them taking and, of course, the rumors started spreading like wild fire. that the gorgeous sakura finally found someone yet it’s far from the reality. it’s only a rumor the elders of the town started spreading, happy to see the sweet girl finally happy in a relationship. though it’s only making her uncomfortable and feel bad for the guy involved.

“Blessed” by the goddess of nature herself and is the first generation of shapeshifters on his family. Some are not so happy with his other side.
While he had decent grades at school, he was never part of the top list of students, instead he was known for his athletics. Basketball, football, traditional wrestling, taekwondo, anything the school or after school activities offered he took and he was good. He went into a couple of competitions.
Came all the way to the capital to become a veterinarian.
Happy with his job, he seems like he can really connect with animals ;D

Seems like a cold boy but is actually a loving soul, he is a bit of a flirt but basically he is just a giant puppy with never ending energy but tons of love.

some background:
25yrs old, he/him for convenience but he dgaf. spice it up for him if you would like
used to live with his parents and sister on their farm, which was constantly terrorized by some local wildlife. he was raised to be v vigilant, to be the protector of the house & his sister against whatever monster was out there
started shifting when he was pretty young but was never conscious of it. he thought it was sleepwalking and that his parents' sheer paranoia were just affecting his sleeping habits
fast forward to when he's 16 and he wakes up to the house ransacked by an animal. his parents get angry because they think he left his sister for the night to #party and the animal got in, and the accusation gets juyoon so worked up that it triggers a shift, and then ta dah, they find out he's been the monster all this time
i do headcanon that there was actually another wild animal that tried to get in that night and juyoon had shifted to fend it off, but ended up in the woods bc he couldn't get back in. it's too late for any of them to realize that though, bc juyoon completely thinks it was him and his parents have already left him behind and took his sister with them, sooo
they were nice enough to leave him an old family cottage though! and a cellar and a set of chains he can use to bind himself so that when he shifts, he doesn't hurt anyone! bc he's a feral dangerous creature right! :\
present day tidbits:
never seen without his necklace of keys, esp. a star-shaped tin “key” that his sister made for him.
frequently stays at the nunui yeowang lodge. aka someone there took pity on him being left behind by his family and is letting him work in exchange for staying at one of their rooms
but there are certain times when he can just feel it will be a bad night, and at sunset he'll come down the other side of the mountain instead. his old house is all abandoned now, but he still has the little cottage his parents left him, where he hangs up lunar lanterns (like solar lanterns, but only glows when the moon is out?) to guide himself back there if he happens to shift midway. he locks himself in until it wears off and he’s human again
actively keeps the cottage a secret -- he's got a couple of plots involving people finding out about it, but in general he's v wary of what could happen to him if people found out what he was. his parents made it seem so dangerous, ykwim?
comes across as blithe, nonchalant, and sometimes mean. not sure how to explain the vibe --- he has such a complex about feeling monstrous and the terrible things he might do, that when he is in human form and he hears about humans and their human fears, he just has to have a little giggle about it
currently trying to quit caffeine --- for a while, he would drink a lot of coffee and other stimulants to put off going to sleep as long as possible, but now he's trying to be better about it. trying to replace it with other distractions---though who knows if those will be much better
like i mentioned, he knows v little about his lineage and what he really even "is." i headcanon that his family tree had some shapeshifter blood from wayyyy up there, but it's been so long that he and his parents just never knew any different.
unless someone would like to plot out smth involving our muses' backstories !! i'm flexible, it would be cool to have some longstanding connection between their families and for our muses to actually be coming full circle by meeting. that is metal to me
anyway, bc of that lack of knowledge, he's been hanging around the temple lately, kind of wishy washy about actually going in; he doesn't feel particularly holy/devout/enough of a believer in the goddess of nature to feel like he belongs there, but he still wishes he could learn more somehow
after losing his sister, he sort of iced over? his core nature is to care and to protect but he doesn't rly want to go through anything like that again, to see someone's faith in him completely shatter and to be completely left behind again. so that nature tends to manifest in backhanded ways --- checking up on people by barging into their homes unprompted, making someone feel better by fucking w someone else to get a little giggle out of them, or hunting down someone who was shitty to them and fucking up their property
but also, he has become a bit jaded about other people and their true natures. like, sometimes he DOES think that person deserved to trip on their face. sometimes it isn't enough to simply watch it happen and he has to make it happen himself
my goal for him is to come to some kind of terms about his self as a shapeshifter ? i know i want him to be able to embrace that side of himself more freely and to not feel so #disgusting when he shifts or at least stop feeling like he literally has to lock himself up to get through it, but i'm excited for whatever turns he might take to get there :>

BACKGROUND
found unconscious along the shores of mabeob by an elderly baek youngja around the assumed age of 6 years old
suae has no recollection of her life prior to her peculiar arrival
she was eventually taken in by grandma baek who lived alone
initially, she lived quietly while grandma baek attempted to find out who she was and where she could call a home to. all the while, the lost girl followed her around like a little duckling, keeping her company around town as she completed daily tasks and such
eventually, when it seemed as though there were no one out there looking for the little girl, grandma baek decided to raise her as her own, granting suae her name the moment she'd decided to do so
suae has been grateful and goes above and beyond to assist "her grandma" and loves her dearly
however, in an attempt to maintain the peaceful bliss of their life together, suae hides the fact the she is a mermaid — a secret she hadn't even discovered the truth of until her early teen years
she's still unsure as to how her abilities as a mermaid had remained hidden until then, especially her tears that became beautifully round pearls, but she attempts to learn bits and pieces of her "true self" through stories and folktales told around the island
PERSONALITY
i very much had the little mermaid in mind for inspo!!
she's very sweet and naive — a true hopeless romantic in search of her true love!! a prince in shining armor!!!
extremely headstrong and stubborn, suae will always fight for what she believes in regardless of the consequences
one of the most loyal people you will meet! she loves passionately and fiercely and will do anything for her loved ones. even if you were to betray or hurt her, she wouldn't be able to forget your connection and would still be on your side until the end
bright, bubbly, a ray of sunshine — words often used to describe her around town. however, the complete opposite could be said for those who had known her as a child, when she first arrived in mabeob
those who also grew up with her in the outskirt homes area as well as classmates from grade school had known her to be quiet, demure, and shy. she often never made eye contact or spoke to anyone else unless spoken to first
one thing that has stayed the same since her childhood is how emotional she is. though she puts up a front of strength and bravery, she's quite fragile and known to be a crybaby. however, she'll run and hide before she gives you a chance to see her burst out in tears
