Fore Edge Friday

This week we present three volumes of an 1840 edition of The History of English Poetry, from the Close of the Eleventh Century to the Commencement of the Eighteenth Century by Thomas Warton, printed in London for Thomas Tegg. The edges on all three sides have been marbled in what is called a Gloster pattern. 

The pattern is created by tossing colors onto the surface of a bath, then running a comb with one set of teeth twice across, once in either direction with the second pass halving the first. Then one or more colors of ink mixed with a dispersant like turpentine are sprinkled onto the bath, creating very fine, open spots inside the combed lineations. The edges of the text block are knocked flat, clamped in place, and then dipped into the mixture and withdrawn immediately. Excess fluid is then blown or shaken off quickly to prevent it from running into the book. Once dry, the marbled edges are burnished. The endpapers of these volumes are also marbled with the same pattern.
