Following from last week's Thursday Tales, ‘Alchemy, Occultism and Magic at the French Court 1677 - 1680’, this week we chart the death of the ‘Ancien Regime’, the rise of the French Revolution, and how the occult underground played a central role. 26 August 1795, death of Italian adventurer, magician, alchemist, occultist and free mason Giuseppe Balsamo, who self styled himself Count Alessandro di Cagliostro. The founder of the Egyptian Rite of the Freemasons, Balsamo travelled across Europe ingraining himself into European Royal Courts to present his self taught occult arts such as psychic healing, alchemy and scrying. After being present in the French Royal court, and presented as a potential doctor to the American ambassador Benjamin Franklin, Cagliostro was implicated in the ‘Affair of the Diamond Necklace’, in which Queen Marie Antoinette was falsely accused of defrauding the crown jewels in order to purchase a very expensive necklace. In reference to last week’s Thursday Tales, the 1677 ‘Affair of the Poisons’. was still firmly embedded in the public imagination, as rumour surrounded Marie-Antoinette; with accusations of witchcraft, and whose real aim in the necklace affair it was suggested had been to poison the king, her husband with a dose of the crushed diamonds. The scandal damaged her already tarnished reputation with the French people, who labelled as ‘Madame Deficit’, for her extravagant lifestyle, and lack of understanding of the economic problems facing France prior to the Revolution. Imprisoned in the Bastille for nine months, Cagliostro was released and then banished from the court.
