what you have to consider about mac & dennis' current relationship is that dennis has been convincing him the things they do together don't count as gay sex since back when mac was homophobic
my concept of their current relationship is: friends/roommates with increasingly regular & increasingly intimate benefits that are 100% on dennis' terms (meaning dennis can initiate but mac will be rejected if he tries -- except for when dennis signals that he wants mac to initiate, in which case mac will be given the cold shoulder if he fails to). in mac's mind, their hookups are completely random and unpredictable, but dennis keeps a strict mental calendar designed to feel random so that he doesn't fall into a routine with mac (for once) and so that mac can never expect anything from him.
