Toronto native, Mackenta, is starting to gain attention in the United States with her new alternative R&B. Mackenta began to gain some popularity in 2019 with the release of her EP Over the Influence and the first single “Issues.” Since then she has performed on large festival stages and had her music listed in official Spotify playlists and played on OVO Radio.
Mackenta’s new single, “Dawn,” is the first single from her upcoming untitled EP due to drop sometime this year. The single discusses a relationship that has gone sour due to immaturity, misunderstandings and the lack of boundaries.
In fact, it seems as if Mackenta is singing to a lover who has been giving in to their vices. She mentions gin and cocaine as if her lover is using these things to self medicate. Mackenta’s sultry voice sings over a beat that has a heavy drum influence, causing a rather large contrast between the two.
Mackenta says that “’Dawn’ is about falling for someone that you know won’t work in the long run, but letting it happen anyways.”
