The Old West Coast Road out of Christchurch is quieter then the main Alpine Highway, ideal for RV travel. The landscape is undulating with little hills of alluvial rubble in the wake of a long disappeared glacial retreat. The road runs along parallel to the Waimakariri River and joins with the Inland Scenic Route on the South side of the river at Waddington. We turned left to briefly follow the Alpine Highway before a right turn takes us back onto the Inland Scenic Route. The weather was showers and at best, like a can can dancer the low cloud would lift and reveal the foothills, before coming down again, showing no glimpse of the alps in the background. The weather continued like this along the Inland Scenic Route until we came to the top of Burkes Pass. Then it was that big relaxing sigh as the MacKenzie Basin, surrounded by mountains on all sides, spread out before us, with blue skies and the odd fluffy white cloud around the Southern Alps in the distance. The grass is usually burnt to a brown crisp by now, but it's green like winter. But where oh where are the colourful lupins? We're back on line with our daily updates, but not in Aussie, so instead of g'day mate, it's Kia ora bro (Maori language meaning have life be well/healthy and is translated as an informal hi). We've slipped across to New Zealand for Christmas and New Year with our families and a good catch up with friends.
