These pictures are from my 2015 trip to South Africa. As a first year teacher I was invited to embark on a trip with my high school’s Culture Keepers Club. A club solely designed to teaching Black students their heritage and that they are powerful! 11 girls ranging from 14-18 took the trip to learn about themselves, their culture and their heritage, but what I did not realize was how much I would learn about myself! Many of the students had never been outside of the Bay Area, California let alone the country, but we persevered and learned a lot about ourselves and each other. Coming back from this trip I was inspired to do two things 1. Spark a change in the mindsets of young Black students and 2. Change the perception that Black people don’t travel. Following this trip I have traveled to at least 10 states and have plans to travel to two other countries this upcoming summer. As of yet, none have topped the experience I had in South Africa but with every trip my horizons are broadened and I learn more culturally and about myself!
