The almost fake pink of my Rotala macrandra 'variegated'
Rotala macrandra variegated
I recently got a stem of this very rare aquatic plant. While it got some damage from shipping visible in older leaves, the new growth beautifully displays the veinal variegation. A plant is called variegated when it show two or more differently colored sections, here the veins lack the red pigmentation. Variegation can have genetic causes and be true in seed, but it can also be just a mutation in the meristem and not be true in seed, viruses can also cause this. Now idea what is the cause here, though.
Rotala macrandra itself is a fairly demanding plant, needing high light and additional CO2 for proper growth as well as generous fertilization. Otherwise, it is a fast growing plant, ideal for making stunningly red groups of plants.
Love this plant #rotala #macrandra
