I don't get it, what is so bad about the Mad Hermit? I haven't played the game for years, I just remember him as a difficult mini boss
Oh, fighting him isn’t the issue.
It’s if you DON’T want your character to attempt to steal from/kill a random dude just because he’s crazy.
See, he has three items, one of which is plot related and two of which are not, although a new player might not know that for sure. The way you can get them from him (bar killing him) is to trade. So far so good. Except: 1) There is no indication anywhere about what he will or will not want; 2) Before you ask him any question, including whether he’d be willing to trade, he wants to ask you a question; 3) It is only after he asks you this question and you ask to trade that the dialogue possibilities pop up and you discover what, if anything, you have that he might want; and 4) HE QUICKLY RUNS OUT OF QUESTIONS FOR YOU AND WILL THEN REFUSE TO TALK TO YOU. AND THERE IS NO INDICATION OF THIS FACT UNTIL IT HAPPENS.
So, 1) You could easily use up most of your questions on asking him about himself, which is supposed to be a large part of the gameplay in this game and Bioware games in general. The game has so far taught you to ask a lot of questions and learn about other characters. And now out of the blue you’re being punished for being interested in an NPC.
2) As a first-time player, without a walkthrough, the only way I can determine what he might want to use up a question. So I could easily end up coming back to him multiple times and wasting a question on discovering that I currently have nothing he would like. And the items he wants are not specifically marked, so I could easily have sold them, because my inventory is not fucking infinite. And again, as a first time player, I will then discover, possibly after a lot of time running back and forth through TWO different areas to check things with him, possibly after doing other plot related stuff in between, that now all that work was for nothing and I am now FORCED to kill him, or the giant oak. And remember, there is ZERO indication that he will run out of questions. ZERO.
Is there anyway at all I don’t come out of this interaction wanting to throw my computer across the room?
So I am now seriously considering killing him (even though it’s way out of character for my Warden) purely because I’m mad at the game.
