Happiness Is A Mirage
I was in Mad Mark's for dinner earlier this week. I ordered a burger [not really important detail to this blog post]... Anyway, my order arrived and it was served with a Mad Mark's napkin which says,
Let's make people happy!
And when I saw this happiness-themed napkin in the background of my delicious meal, the great Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn came into my mind. I remember his commentary on happiness because he usually uses food to illustrate his points on happiness. He had such a unique view on happiness because he was trying to attain it while he was in the Gulag...
Happiness is a mirage... I was happy bringing up my children, but they spat on my soul. To preserve this happiness I took books which were full of truth and burned them in the stove. As for the so-called "happiness of future generations," it's even more of a mirage. Who knows anything about it? Who has spoken with these future generations? Who knows the idols they will worship? Ideas of what happiness have changed too much through the ages. No one should have the effrontery to try and plan it in advance. When we have enough loaves of white bread to crush them under our heels, when we have enough milk to choke us, we still won't be in the least happy. But if we share things we don't have enough of, we can be happy today! If we care only about 'happiness' and about reproducing our species, we shall merely crowd the earth senselessly and create a terrifying society.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Cancer Ward
Solzhenitsyn is one of the secular authors who I can say has changed my perspective... I realized through reading his novels that happiness is something you can only attain by doing something first. And genuine happiness can only be a result of doing something for others, not doing something for yourself.

Dinner then Dessert
Last Friday was spent with friends at work over good food plus dessert!
Our first stop was at Mad Mark's in Glorietta 5. I first found out this "creamery and good eats" resto when we had our departmental meeting at Kapitolyo, Pasig. It's more than just a sandwich and ice cream shop; they offer really affordable and delectable steaks and baby back ribs!
Craving for some ribs in Johnny Double Black Sauce?
I ordered the back ribs and spent below 300 pesos and chose two side dishes. I craved for mashed potato and corns and carrots. :) Eats so good!
Must-try:
Lumberjack - 310 (Full); Signature Steak - 195 (Healthy); Batavia Pasta - 260 (Full)
Note: Ooopsies! Wasn't able to take a lot of photos. Should've brought my cam. Phone won't do.
Mad Mark's has homemade ice cream, too. But we opted for the very-famous ice cream parlor of Basskin-Robbins at The Fort.
I came across many write-ups about Basskin-Robbins. Writers and bloggers alike say that BR has made a comeback in Manila. So, they've been here all along, yet I just learned (and tasted) them last Friday.

Mine at the top: Caramel truffle and raspberry. I got each flavor same from Nathan's and Karla's cups.
Nathan: "You should've picked what is not in our cups!
Me: Deadma *licks spoon*
Nathan had Mint Choco while Karla loved Green Tea.
I should really try all 31 flavors! (*makes a mental note*). That raspberry is so rich in flavor; it got mini heart-shaped chocolates in it. While caramel has been my all-time favorite flavor, Basskin-Robbins' caramel out tastes other caramel sundaes / ice cream I know. it's thick, sweet, and creamy - with real truffles!
I'll be coming back for the other 27 flavors - and sundae customization, too!

Foodtrip Chronicles: Mad Mark's Creamery & Good Eats
I've been reading reviews about Mad Mark's ever since I can remember and I actually can't believe I'm writing my own review!!! Wuhoo! This summer's goal is to try new restaurants. :)
My friends kidnapped me and we went to Kapitolyo to try Mad Mark's! We had to wait for around 10 minutes because the place was packed. We finally got a table and we were given menus. We were about to order until we found out that you have to go to the counter. Woops!
Cajun fries, P55 (as a side)
Ordered cajun fries as a side for my chicken meltdown. It was served first though.. So I barely got to eat it along with my sandwich. :-( Hmm, nothing special. Your typical fries with cajun seasoning. HAHAHA really, I'd probably get something else when we go back here. KFC fries are better.
Fan favorite — regular steak + bootstrap sauce + bacon potato salad + garden grains, P240
Claud ordered the Fan Favorite set. I think she changed the grilling sauce though because Pao & JJ ordered the bootstrap sauce and it was salty. Claud’s grilling sauce was leaning towards the sweeter side. I tried the bacon potato salad which is a cold side. In fairness, it wasn’t mushy! The potatoes had the right amount of bite.
Regular steak with two sides of your choice (hot or cold), P240
Pao ordered his steak with the bootstrap sauce. The bootstrap sauce is what I would put as the "classic" steak sauce. It had the right amount of peppery, salty, sweet and spicy. It was BBQ-y in short!
Regular steak with two sides of your choice (hot or cold), P240
JJ's order! Just like Pao's but he chose garden grains as his other side. :)
Hotlanta, P170
Miko ordered the Hotlanta. It's a southern fried chicken mildy spiced with creole seasoning. The fried chicken was boneless and topped with cream mushroom sauce topped with bacon bits! It was served with bacon potato salad and coleslaw. The chicken's boneless by the way. It was really crispy and juicy! The cream mushroom sauce didn't overpower the seasoning of the chicken. :)
Chicken meltdown, P190 half P260 whole
I ordered the half of this one and I was really happy with it! Grilled chicken, bell peppers and caramelized onion smothered with cheese sauce. It was super yummy and filling. The cheese sauce wasn't cloying at all. Everything just went so well together. The bread had the right amount of crunch too. I always eat sandwiches/burgers with my hands but I had to use utensils with this one because the toppings were overflowing!!
What's a Mad Mark's experience without trying their homemade ice cream right?! Of course I kinda persuaded my friends to get different flavors! Hahaha! Food blogger tendencies LOL feeling!
Half-baked madagascar, P70
Cookie dough! It's one of their best sellers. It's not as sweet as other cookie dough ice cream out there which is good since there's a tendency for it to be cloying (lol favorite word???) I think I got the scoop with little cooke dough..... though. HEHEHE still good nevertheless!
Javan Hot Chocolate, P70
Not your typical chocolate ice cream (eh duh kasi hot chocolate nga?) but really, it was like drinking hot chocolate but cold and solid..... HAHAHA what I mean is that it had the right amount of sweetness and bitterness. Okay, in short it was bittersweet!!! I can't say it's my favorite but it's good! This is one of their best sellers also!
Strawberries & Cream, P70
Now this is what I will get next time!!! You can really taste the strawberries and the cream. No artificial flavoring at all! It really tasted fresh and natural (commercial?) Claud said it reminded of her Häagen-Dazs' strawberry ice cream.
Butter pecan, P70
The butter pecan taste was really mild. I was expecting something with a stronger kick (Ouch! Chos) or maybe I'm just used to kinda overly sweet butter pecan ice creams out there. It's not bad, it's just me!
Overall, it was a really good experience! The food's affordable and yummy. My only comment is that the place is small so ordering from the counter's not really a good idea because it gets crowded. I'm not sure if it's because it was a Friday when we visited but if you're going as a big group, you better go early because the place gets packed. :)
Happy foodies!
Mad Mark's is located at 23 East Capitol Drive Brgy. Kapitolyo!
Charmaine is too excited for this, isn't she?
Mad Mark's, Kapitolyo Basket of Cajun The Man Sandwich
Everyone left the house except for me and Dad, so we decided to walk down the street and get ice cream while they were gone. :) There's a little local ice cream shop about a block away from our house called Mad Mark's. They have homemade ice cream that is amazing. I got Half-Baked Madagascar (cookie dough) ice cream. YUM!
