@madam-buffalo ok, well... I still don't know his entire back story because I haven't figured out the main story yet, but I'll share what I know! Joseph is adopted, his adoptive father is single and some kind of important figure in the city they live in (Joseph is an adult, but he still has a good relationship with his dad). His biological father, however, is a terrible person who takes advantage of people and is generally unpleasant. He's some kind of... demi-human, I'm not sure exactly what he is. I don't want to call them demons or monsters, but a lot of the characters in the story are not human in the biological sense. Anyway, Joseph is a guy who deals in information. Underneath the cross-shaped hole in his tongue is another black tongue similar to a frog's. That tongue is able to suss out the truth in people's words. Essentially what happens is when Joseph is talking to someone the black tongue "records" their words and is able to play them back later, but speaking the truth. It cannot read minds, it only takes the information that it is told and turns it into the truth. So, say you ask a person about a specific event, the tongue can only learn the truth about that particular event and not any other subjects, and even then only what they choose to talk about. If a person is unwilling to talk at all, Joseph's tongue can't get anything from them. Which is why he has connections to so many people and is kind of shady. He gives his information to the good guys, but he's not one to stick his neck out for them. The people he associates with don't know about his tongue, and if they did he would have SO many people after him. The as-of-yet nameless main character heavily relies on Joseph's information to do his job (which is essentially some kind of supernatural p.i./cop, I think?), but others with their agency are repulsed by and distrustful of him. This doesn't really bother him, and in fact most things don't bother him. He jokes around a lot and is able to talk his way out of most sticky situations. Ummm... that's about all I can think of, but any specific questions about him would help me figure things out probably.
