*Maddie was lost. she couldn't find Big Brother's magical trail, it ended at the edge of a big building she couldn't get into. She searched around the outside of the building, but she wasn't used to the city, and all the buildings looked the same. One wrong turn around a wall, and now she couldn't find the way back to the first building. She huddled up against the bricks and sniffled.*
*Madeline approached the lettuces, checking for people before she left cover. No one that she could see.
She grasped the outermost leaf of one of the lettuce plants-dark green, flecked with bronze. It was pretty, and she broke it off carefully. From lettuce to lettuce, she took a leaf from each, just like Momma did, so there would be more lettuce tomorrow.
Arms full of leaves, she made her way to the roomed that Velvet lived in. She needed her food.
The baby rabbit hopped up to the edge of the wire fencing, happy to see her and her cargo. Maddie couldn't get the latch of the bunny door open, but she didn't have to. With a little concentration, she was crawling out of Velvet's little house, and the rabbit turned around and bounded to her. She laid the lettuce down, and Velvet immediately tucked in. Her baby friend was growing fast. Father said she might even get as big as Maddie was now.
She petted Velvet's head as she ate. Momma sometimes did that to her, petting her hair, and singing, so Maddie began to hum softly.
She couldn't stay long. Momma was still around the house, ans she had to keep hiding.*
*Madeline Keeny gazed at the strange face in the mirror, trying to understand why her reflection sometimes lied to her. It was a beautiful lie, but that didn't mean it wasn't disconcerting. Round, faceted, ice blue eyes peered out of a fuzzy, purple, wedge-shaped face. Large, tubular ears, and a small, velvet covered horn poked out of the top, a mane of purple and forest green feathery fur framing the chin.
She had no frame of reference for what she was looking at, but at least it was pretty. She wanted to ask it what it was, but was afraid to make any noise.
Madeline heard her mother approaching, and ran from the reflection, to hide.*
