❝ Do you truly think things will ever change? ❞ It was a question mainly asked out of curiosity than an actual reason; with all that Anders had survived, there was a chance it never would change --- take out the Templar’s and someone else would come into be worse. A never ending cycle to a story he had been fighting against for years.

                 Amell ancestors peered down silently as Anders leant his staff against the wall and straightened his coat. The Estate was more welcoming than he expected - not that he had been inside many noble residences that weren’t run down and taken over by some young and aspiring gang. Having had no real experience with nobility, he was suddenly aware of how starkly out of place he was and wondered how Hawke was adapting to the gilded world of Hightown. No doubt she would be an interesting addition to the rich and powerful and could only imagine how many social invites she had turned down or tossed into that large fireplace. Her mother would probably force her to go anyway. He felt a stab of sympathy as he thought of all the posturing, polite gossip and little hors d'oeuvres she would have to endure. Fine dresses were most likely involved. Well...

                 Anders tried to put the distracting image of Hawke in a dress out of his mind and was about to announce his presence when a large, solid mass of slobber and fur bounded into the entrance hall. The mabari cannoned straight for the hapless mage and pinned him to the wall.

                 -- “ Oh for-...Get off me! Maker, what does Hawke feed you? No! Down! Augh, stop licking me! ” He only just managed to wrestle himself free as Hawke appeared and valiantly tried to regain his composure - so much for a dignified entrance.

                  ❝ I have an inquiry of utmost importance, ❞ was he supposed to walk up to the Champion of Kirkwall without so much as a by your leave? Oh, perhaps not, but who cared when it was nearing the purported END OF THE WORLD? Well, Chantry mothers cared and so did about three quarters of the population of Skyhold, but no matter. He leans just a tad closer ( whilst keeping a respectful distance ) and lowers his voice, ❝ Does Varric win every bet he makes? I always repay my debts, mind you, but this is starting to get a little ridiculous. I’m starting to think that he’s been blessed with luck by Andraste herself. ❞

“What’s it like in Kirkwall? I’ve always wanted to visit but I’ve never had the opportunity. It sounds incredible-- and also a bit oppressive, but that might just be the CITY OF CHAINS imagery. Plus all the history behind it, but I’m sure that’s all well past. Have you ever been this far south?”

The questions come rapid fire-- one after another-- from the young mage brimming with curiosity. She’s sure she must come across as terribly naive to the Champion, and if Hawke shows any signs of discomfort, Phaedra will back down. For now, though, her appetite for information is too great to ignore.

            “All these stories about your feats of heroism, and not one of them about how you dealt with Carver all those years.” Speaking to Hawke let him feel like he didn’t have to be so serious for a moment when he didn’t have to worry about getting a serious answer. Anders was, as he often liked to do under all that worry, making light of the things he still could. He didn’t have any issue with Carver, he just wondered what it was like. Anders had no need or desire to say it, but he was a little envious of Hawke’s childhood, even if one of the costs was Carver.

            “Do you think you can be made Champion of Annoying Little Brothers?”

     “Qunari attacks, warden conspiracies ... We always seem to meet under some of the worst of circumstances, don’t we?” Well, except for the whole chantry bit he’s heard so much about. The Champion of Kirkwall was a relieving sight though, finally someone not out to silence him for good.  His hand lowers away from the hilt of the sword sheathed by on his hip, gesture almost apologetic about the presumed action with now diminished tension.

      He shouldn’t, he knows. Varric’s been teaching him that sometimes people’s heads are private places, that certain things aren’t for him to know. But he’s still himself, no matter how human, and while his own pain drowns everything else out sometimes, Hawke’s is louder, a cacophony. The cry of a bird as it’s crushed.   

          “Vengeance, vicious, venomous. It isn’t your fault. Magic can’t be contained in a circle; it would have crumbled eventually. Not everything has to be on your shoulders.”
