#marchmeetthemaker - day 19 - ‘can’t live without’. I did a City & Guilds in embroidery in my 20s, and learnt so much from my tutors, Dee and Christine Chester. I was desperate for a Bernina sewing machine like the ones we used at college. Eventually I scrimped enough to manage to buy this one second hand. It was made the same year as me - 1968 and has seen me through everything from power ranger costumes to puppets. It seized up yesterday and I nearly panicked...but then again so do I now and then! . . . #sewing #bernina #making #handmade #puppet #madeinnewhaven (at Newhaven, East Sussex)
Today’s #marchmeetthemaker prompt is ‘plans and dreams’. Well my dream is to one day open a children’s theatre in my home town, #newhaven. Somewhere to put on shows I’ve written/worked on but also for other theatre groups to come and perform too. Recently there was a meeting held to see if there were any creative people in Newhaven who thought there should be some sort of creative quarter. The organisers expected around 15 people and I wondered if I should even go because it would’ve been embarrassing being the only person there! But there were about 100 of us! So exciting and inspiring. My dream might yet come true. (Thanks to @imeusdesign for the Newhaven logo). . . . #puppet #theatre #childrenstheatre #education #community #madeinnewhaven #bobblehattheatre #family (at Newhaven, East Sussex)
Bit late to #marchmeetthemaker today. The prompt is “routine”. It’s something I’ve worked on since being freelance and despite being a naturally quite scatty person I’ve found I am far more productive when I have a routine in place. I get up around 6.30-6.45, and after sorting out the dogs and humans and the minimum of housework I can get away with, I aim to get in my studio for 10.00. (Woman’s Hour used to be my incentive but I have given up my R4 habit now!) I use a bullet journal for planning and wrote a daily to-do list, plus the Pomodoro Technique for time management of tasks. It’s amazing for me - it keeps me focused yet gives me breaks to stretch my back, walk the dogs etc. I usually work this way until around 6 if possible, when I cook dinner and then either bring work indoors to carry on with in front of the telly, or sometimes I’ll write the next day’s to do list. . . . #routine #planning #bulletjournal #bujo #pomodoro #madeinnewhaven (at Newhaven, East Sussex)
I missed yesterday’s #marchmeetthemaker because the prompt didn’t apply to my work really. Today’s is ‘workspace’. I have a little studio in my garden. It used to be a coal store or something and after my mum died I used the money she left to get it converted and electricity put in. She was always so supportive of my career and it’s nice for me to feel she still supports me now. I can’t post a current pic as I’m mid manic project and don’t have time to tidy it. So here are a couple of glimpses. . . . . #puppet #wip #studio #mum #madeinnewhaven #art (at Newhaven, East Sussex)
I have cheated a bit for #marchmeetthemaker today. Its supposed to be ‘favourite to make’ and that’s too difficult for me! I can’t choose between puppet making and illustration- and printmaking can’t be left out either. So I’ve chosen to show my favourite subject to create...people! I just love to draw, write about and make them - and if they are slightly odd and have an animal companion then all the better. Top left are my puppets, Mavis and Jim. Next door a page from my favourite university project - my mini book, ‘Speed Dating). Bottom left is an etching with aquatint I did at BIP (I love etching so much and wish I could still do it) - and lastly I couldn’t leave out my picture book, (and soon to be puppet performance!) Not Today Celeste! . . #illustration #printmaking #puppets #madeinnewhaven
Day three of #marchmeetthemaker - ‘How I started’. I’ve never not wanted to create so it’s difficult to say! I grew up loving to write, draw and make things, as well as being a voracious reader. I just kind of forgot to stop! Although I never stopped creating, I was 45 by the time I got my MA in children’s book illustration at Cambridge School of Art, and 48 by the time I got published! So I’m living proof that it’s never too late. . . . #marchmeetthemaker #illustration #madeinnewhaven
