I said that dogs bred for extreme miniaturism are often unhealthy and easily hurt, yes, but that does not mean all, and I am aware of that. It is a serious issue, though, especially in the age of puppy mills, and I thought it was worth bringing up. There is a major difference between breeding two healthy dogs that happen to be on the smaller size for their breed and produce healthy pups, and the teacup dog industry as it is. (The Miniature Schnauzer the person brought up on your post is a very different situation from the "teacup" dogs). These "designer" dogs have a great deal of health problems, and with the way the images are spread around so widely these days, I think it's incredibly important that people be aware of health risks.

By the generally accepted definition, "teacup" dogs are smaller than any recognized breed standard for already small toy breeds, and are unable to regulate many internal processes the way the normal size for those breeds would.

It's because of these that you will almost never find "teacup" animals from a reputable accredited breeder. Miniature versions of other breeds, maybe - because there are ways to breed for smaller versions within a bigger pool without bringing up those particular health risks (though most breeds do have certain assorted health factors).

There are always exceptions, but with the articles I've read online and the input I've heard both from my own veterinarian and friends in vet school, I believe in this case the exceptions don't validate ignorance of the problem. If more people start doing research and learning  before bringing a new animal home - in any case - I think the world would be a lot better place.
