(me putting off working on the long-ago outlined but not yet finished scenes of elena finally meeting maeve's dad): but... what about ANNIE meeting maeve's dad? ... honestly can't decide if she'd try sooo hard to like him or sooo hard to hate him. the true secret third option is annie would never meet him because in a maeveannie universe maeve can NOT go through the specific emotional journey it would take to consider ending her estrangement with him... (clarification: it is not maevelena endgame that makes maeve capable of reconciling with her father. it's actually... ashley.)
"You don't need powers, you just need to be human"
like damn there were some aspects of s3 of the boys i didnt like but if nothing else i'll defend it to the death because it made maeveashley (a relationship that is consequential to) canon!!!!
goddamn it's been so long that i actually also forgot that before maeveashley was 'canon' (as in consequential to the narrative) that it WAS just in my head... oh man i forgot... I forgot that period of my maeveashley insanity BEFORE season 3, when i saw an alleged spoiler that maeve was going to have a "love interest" in season 3 who was an "existing character" from the show... and i convinced myself that ashley was the best and most logical choice. (I stand by that. somewhere in my history there's a post of my wild pitch of how maeve and ashley hooking up in s3 could've played out and tbh i think it would've been better than what happened with butcher but i'm still just salty that maeve/butcher was so poorly executed compared to what it could've been).
anyway after i went a little nuts convincing myself that was a legit possibility the show then went and made a significant factor in the season ending ashley actually caring about maeve like i think that's still the most real emotional thing she has had a character ... i blocked out most of s4 but like s4 mostly just made her more cartoonishly evil and like a part of me can't complain about that because if anyone can make that ridiculosity work it's colby minifie, but also i could do without her raping/aiding and abetting the rape of hughie. (i really could've done without that scene as a whole.) and i'm fuzzy on a lot of the deets but i feel like the sort of regret and empathy ashley was showing in s3 was kinda lost in s4 and i remember it just ending on a note of fear for her leading to taking the V. which like, the fear is understandable! but i liked where they seemed to be heading... I want a "redemption arc" for her, and i put that in quotes on purpose, because I don't want a traditional "oh i'm good and i see the error of my ways" arc. i think you could do an extremely ashley redemption arc, where it is MOSTLY for self-preservation that she aligns with the good guys, and she's still annoying as shit, and sometimes dead weight, but then comes thru in a small but pivotal (and still ridiculous) way to help contribute to saving the world. THAT is what i desperately want to see
but if i can't have that i will settle for one more acknowledgement of how she risked it all to save maeve... PLEASE pelase let that come back in s5 please i beg
a lil dose of maeveashley... because i miss them
question that just occured to me, for my own expanded-canon about maeve... i wonder if she knows/ever finds out that a-train killed popclaw? given the lil backstory I added with her and popclaw... i wonder how she would react to that. especially also accounting for the fact that in canon, maeve seems kinda cool with a-train, even a lil supportive at moments, in contrast to her annoyance and disdain for all the other guys in the group. so it really makes you wonder if she knows some of the worst stuff
and now i'm just imagining like sometime in TMDOMS/after the ending of that fic maeve and ashley just hanging out and ashley just casually mentions it not thinking it's a big deal like... picture this with me...
(ashley's in the midst of ranting about a-train, one of her favorite pastimes, maybe she's heard rumors that he's trying to be a good guy and working with the Boys now and getty pissy about who deserves 'redemption arcs' (only her, of course! in her opinion...)
ashley: I don't know how they can trust him, after all the shit he's done. all the people he's killed.
maeve: i mean, yeah, but we've all killed people. you've killed people.
ashley: person. ONE person. and a very evil person, might i add, and I killed him to save YOUR life, so don't go lumping me in with A-Train. He's got a way higher body count than me
maeve: so it's just about numbers, then? so what does that make me?
ashley: ugh, you know what I fucking mean. whatever, even if we discount some of them, I just don't see how anyone could trust him after he killed his girlfriend.
maeve: you mean hughie's girlfriend.
ashley: no, I don't.
maeve: ... what?
ashley: oh... yeah, I forgot that was "need to know" and you didn't need to know.
maeve: his... you mean... popclaw?
ashley: mm. straight up murdered her, make it look like an OD. he said homelander made him do it, but mostly to save his own skin. didn't seem too distraught over it, either.
maeve: .what the FUCK. he fucking killed popclaw?
ashley: okay wow. I did not think you would care this much. did you have a relationship with her or...?
maeve: NO. not a RELATIONSHIP. (a bit too emphatic) we went to college together. and did some other... reality TV stuff. that's ALL. we actually didn't talk much. really. at all. ...
(she begins quietly spiraling at just learning the truth of this death now... ashley probably notices she's being weird about it and MAYBE, just MAYBE is able to pester her enough to get her to confess the truth of why she is so Weird about popclaw. lol)
re: maevemadelyn. but also re:maevelena and maeveannie (and also maeveashley). (i can discourse on all of my ships at once, just read on and see!)
I think a lot sometimes about the particular deep nature of maeve's relationship with madelyn - the many positive, negative, intimate, distant, important, toxic, spoken, unspoken aspects of it - and wonder how much she is able to communicate this with the other important people in her life.
like, I've thought a bunch about what exactly elena thinks of madelyn & what maeve has told her about madelyn. however, I haven't written much in any of my (finished) fics of them actually discussing madelyn. i think for a while elena just vaguely thinks of her as 'maeve's boss', and then maybe grows to have negative sentiment towards her, not specifically as a person, but as a stand-in for Vought... but then, i imagine she does glean to some degree that Madelyn is significant to Maeve. either from maeve sharing little bits over the years or just elena... noticing.
One bit that i have always considered "canon" in my own head, though i didn't see a way to shoehorn it into TMDOMS without taking away from the main point of the flashback i wrote about this time, is that when Madelyn died (i.e. between seasons 1-2 of the show), Elena reached out to Maeve. just a short text like: I heard the news, I know you were close, I'm sorry. I believe she'd do this party due to actually like sensing that the loss would hit maeve, who has so few people she's REMOTELY close with, but also a little bit because she wanted an excuse to reach out?
Then, when it comes to maeveannie... it's still very interesting to me to imagine what it's like when madelyn comes up. but in a very different way. in theory they'd have more to talk about given that annie actually knew madelyn. butttt... would not be a pleasant subject between them. because annie had brief but very firmly negative experiences with madelyn. and I think she would (understandably) assume maeve had the same sort of experiences, just for ~13 years instead of a few months. so if she came up annie would be like "haha wow yeah she was terrible right can you believe the kinda stuff she said? like when she told me i should shut up about deep assaulting me? wasn't she the WORST?" and maeve just gets all quiet. silently upset. and annie, being annie, would prod and be like, what is it. you can tell me. I'm sorry. oh. is it just hard to talk about because you had SO MANY bad experiences with madelyn? and maeve would have to be like... "yes but also no... you don't GET IT!!! you weren't THERE!!! yes she was terrible to me too but she made me the woman i AM!!! don't speak ill about my MOM--boss."
and then funnily enough the person i think maeve would have the best time unpacking/reflecting on the strange complexity of madelyn with is ashley. because like annie, ashley knew madelyn - but knew her for longer, and, even in the bare minimum we know from canon, definitely had both positive experiences (getting hired) and negative (getting fired) with her. plus she had more knowledge of the shit madelyn was pulling to juggle all of the seven, plus knowledge of what it was like in madelyn's "shoes"... except not really, with much less control, trying to pretend she had some semblance of power over the group in the mess madelyn left behind. (i mean, one could debate about whether madelyn ever really had more "control" over homelander than ashley did, but like, there is never even an ILLUSION of control with ashley. but that's a different post!). Anyhow, what little i did get to write of maeve semi-reflecting on the fucked up layers of her & madelyn's relationship, she unpacks with ashley. because ashley's the one other person on the planet who gets it the most! (with the possible exception of homelander. but I have loads of other thoughts about how maeve and homelander did and did not discuss madelyn with each other. that's ANOTHER dynamic I love to write in small doses and hunger to tackle in a more focused way but find it hard to properly get the taste of it in anything more than small bites).
poring over my massive maeve fic file and in the document titled 'miscellaneous maeveashley conversations' (most of which made it into TMDOMS in some form) at the very bottom, was this gem of maeve and ashley reflecting in hindsight on homelander's non-impotence (potence?), which somehow did NOT make the cut:
ok fine here are my brain diseased shitpost thoughts about the boys 408 with regards to my personal interests (maeve)
ok nah here are just my silly thoughts i was having of hoping maeve would be relevant in the finale (though I'm glad that didn't happen)
ashley panicking and running i was like GIRL RUN TO MAEVE!!! (even though that obviously wouldn't help since maeve is powerless lol)
NO BUT WHEN SHE WENT TO STEAL THE V for a second... for a second i was like "AND SHE RUNS AWAY AND BRINGS IT TO MAEVE !!! SO MAEVE CAN PROTECT HER FROM HOMELANDER!!!! AND THAT'S HOW MY SPINOFF BEGINS!!!!!" (if only... if only amazon would listen to me)
no but now all i can think about is a maeveashley AU wherein ASHLEY has powers but maeve doesn't (this is possibly the most CURSED thing i've ever thought of in relation to this show/character) (no really think about how cursed that is)
i lied, one other thing i can think about is frenchiko and maevelena going on double dates. being couple friends. somehow i think they would be amazing friends as couples despite not really knowing each other at all they'd be like lifelong neighbors and maybe they swing together
and i'm lying if i was't ALSO imagining at the end when they were going into hiding and all... annie and hughie showing up at maeve & elena's secret farm like "hahaha hi can we crash???"
even tho the end of s4 doesn't make it especially plausible, once again thinking about a 'maeve ends up looking after/mentoring ryan' sort of AU. like. my deluded brain was thinking when mallory and butcher were telling ryan he had to hide like 'oh he should go hide with maeve and learn from her how to cope with powers and stuff idk' ... that makes no sense at all in those circumstances not least because neither of those characters probably know where maeve is (possibly dont even know she's alive? unclear if annie et al told butcher like i assume so but technically we dont know)
stay tuned for probably dumb posts forthcoming from me in the next weeks with specific pitches of her what Season 5 Return Cameo™ will be now that we know the circumstances setting up the season lol
