These are my 6 pages of notes from Will Becher from Aardman’s talk about “Creating Worlds” in Stop Motion at Manchester Animation Festival 2017.

These notes could be useful to me when informing my own design practice.

Manchester Animation Festival 14/11/17 - Part 1

I attended MAF this year on the first day with uni. I got to see a lot of different things over the course of the day from short films, student films and talks in 5 different events.

- This was a gallery of images from Mackinnon & Saunders over two floors of HOME, it was great to see all the photos of puppets/concept art. I found some further research from Mackinnon and Saunders I found below. I visited the studios last year but was told I can’t upload any photos online, but I found some photos from someone elses retelling of their studio visit here (http://catherineeganmi.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/mackinnon-saunders-studio-visit.html), where in which you can see some of their amazing puppets and their scale etc. I also found this link from 2006, so that’s an old resource, but it provides interesting information about the studio and what they do (http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/content/articles/2005/10/20/puppet_studio_tour_201005_feature.shtml). I also found this video showing Peter Saunders discussing his work with clips from some of the films their puppets are in (https://www.investinmanchester.com/information/blog/read/2017/01/case-study-mackinnon-and-saunders-b109). I also found another video, which is an interview with Ian Mackinnon and Peter Saunders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDgSJTcbPiI), where they have their puppets on display and discuss their work and the studio.

- One of the main thing I wanted to see was the “Creating Worlds at Aardman” talk (http://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/creating-worlds-aardman/), as I want to make sets for my stop motion animations, so this talk was very insightful and useful to me, I will attach a link to my notes in a separate post as I wrote a lot during that talk. I also got to meet the puppets from Early Man, which are a similar size to my own puppets and really nice to look at. I also like that they had character sheets for each so that you can learn more about their personalities.
