Hi this weeks episode hit me harder than others and I wanna uhh talk about it.

Obviously there was just a general ‘fuck capitalism fuck landlord’ vibe but something I think non-UK listeners probably didn’t pick up one was how heavily it referenced Grenfell Tower - which was probably partially what this tweet from Rusty Quill was referencing.

There’s loads to read online with just a quick google but in short: Grenfell was an apartment block in London that burnt down in 2017. The cladding around the walls of the tower was extremely flammable. According to the inquiry after the fire, this was known. The flammable cladding was chosen for cost-effectiveness.

The fire at Grenfell Tower killed over 70 people and injured over 70 more. The UK government (and especially the local council) were heavily criticized for not providing enough financial support for the victims. Additionally, investigations as recent as this year have found many tower blocks with similar cladding, many of which that don’t have any plans to replace them. I highly recommend reading about it if you aren’t aware of what happened, because you don’t often see online about how capitalism has fucked over people in the UK, and while this is now three years old it’s still a prime example of the situation for many working class people in Britain.
