March is Women's History Month! This week we are featuring Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, located in Richmond, Virginia.

In 1903, Maggie Walker was the first African American woman in the United States to found a bank. She also started a newspaper and was involved in many community and civic organizations such as the Independent Order of St. Luke and the National Association of Colored Women. As a leader her successes and vision offered tangible improvements in the way of life for African Americans and women. http://www.nps.gov/mawa

Maggie Lena Walker (July 15, 1867(4-7)-December 15, 1934) was an African-American teacher and businesswoman. Walker was the first female bank president of any race to charter a bank in the United States.[1] As a leader, she achieved successes with the vision to make tangible improvements in the way of life for African Americans and women. Disabled by paralysis and limited to a wheelchair later in life, Walker also became an example for people with disabilities.

my junior high school was named after this great woman.
