The Magic Beanstalk
If we plant them this spring, we'll have crunchy fresh beans in our salads all summer long.
Together we tilled the soil, letting the fine black particles sift through our fingers.
We plant the seeds 10cm apart, according the packet's instructions, then water them in and pat them down as if we're tucking them into bed for a good night's sleep.
Each evening after school we water them and watch them grow a little taller, soon they'll need staking to keep them from harm on windy afternoons.
Magnetised by the unfolding beauty of nature before our eyes, we swear that this plant, this magnificent piece of photosynthesising organic matter is truly made of magic.
