           After cursing her shitty memory, Nina tried to count her blessings as she shut the ply board door to her tiny office.  This might be the only day of the year that she could call him first thing in the morning without worrying she was waking him in the middle of the night.  He was either at Kaz’s New Year’s Party or . . .well, admittedly, he might be asleep at home, but he certainly wouldn’t have work the following morning and it would be his own fault for not being at the party if she did wake him.  If she could be getting wasted at a New Year’s party right now, that’s exactly what she’d be doing.  She held her breath as the phone rang.

           “Hello?”  She could hear the faint sounds of music and cheering.

           “Matthias?”

           “Nina!”

“Do you have a set date yet?”  Inej asked as they ate their dinner.  Nina shrugged, tearing off a chunk of her sourdough soup bowl.  She wasn’t entirely sure where the fad of edible bread bowls had come from, but she was grateful for it.

           “You know how it is with the advance party.  There’s only a handful of us.  And since Afghanistan is basically an afterthought, we’re doing some kind of glorified Space-A on cargo aircraft.  They haven’t even really planned our layover yet.  As long as we get to Kuwait by the twenty-fourth, no one seems to give a shit.”

           “That’ll be a fun Christmas Eve,” said Inej dryly.  “I’m sorry you’ll be in transit.”

           Nina shrugged.  “What can you do?”

           “Bitch.  Moan.  Complain.”  They shared a laugh.  “Have you thought about what you’re doing after deployment?  It’s like we used to say, ‘If you don’t have a plan, the Navy has one for you.’”

Magic Matthias:  Chapter 12

           Matthias had always assumed that if he ever sinned and had premarital relations with a woman, he would be consumed by crushing guilt.  Guilt at his inability to control his vulgar urges.  Guilt at falling short of God’s wishes.  Guilt at tempting another soul into sin.  But what he felt that first morning after, when he woke and saw Nina still asleep in his arms, was a profound sense of peace and contentment.  

          He loved her.  

          What could have been more holy than giving themselves to one another?

           He loved her and wanted to know her in every way possible.  And he had.  And it was good.  She had asked him to make them as close as they were meant to be, to bring them as close physically as he had felt to her emotionally for some time.  It had been sacred.  No wonder people like Brum discouraged this sort of thing.  Who would bother with anything else when they could be spending their time in this sort of bliss?  He shifted and Nina rolled towards him, her eyes fluttering.  He waited as she sleepily blinked herself awake, caught sight of him and smiled.

           “Thank you for submitting yourself to my appetites of the flesh,” she said solemnly, then shrieked as he hit her with a pillow.

Magic Matthias:  Chap 15

A/N:  Props to @fericita-s​ for continuing to provide excellent guidance about not just which Bible verses are the most suited for scenes in this story, but exactly how Nina would pervert them with her sense of humor.            Matthias found it impossible to sleep deeply with the light and noise coming through the window.  Nina might not have been able to afford a room with a view, but if he pressed his cheek against the cool pane of glass, he could just make out a city street that seemed busy despite the fact it was the middle of the night.  Not that he could tell.  It was snowing again, but it seemed like sacks of glitter were being dumped between the buildings.  He had never seen anything quite like it.  But he doubted that what seemed wonderous to him was any kind of novelty to her, so he let her sleep.  And when he saw her shiver and her hand reach out to the empty spot on the bed that he had so recently occupied, he tore himself away from the window and slipped beside her once more.

           The room might be simple, but the sheets felt luxuriant.  Nina sighed in her sleep as she snuggled against him.  He closed his eyes and rested his hand against the small of her back.  He wondered if they would have time to print out the picture they had taken on the ferry so he could have it framed.  He yawned and pulled the quilt under his chin, finally dozing off and waking again to the faint wail of sirens and a cacophony of angry drivers slamming their horns.  Nina was snoring lightly, so he tucked her under the blankets and showered.  He made his way alone onto the street, into the bitter winds and the gray slush of the sidewalks.

Nina could be impulsive.  She knew this.  Matthias definitely knew it.

The words had slipped out as easy as breathing.  

So much for simple, ‘Congratulations On Achieving Your Life Dream’ Sex.

But despite the fact that she had just proposed after an incredibly tender and vanilla bout of love making (not that she was ready to admit to Matthias that she ever thought of it like that, she had a reputation to maintain, dammit), Nina felt remarkably calm.

           “Ma’am!”  First Sergeant Gutierrez’s eyes went wide as Nina entered her company area office. “Ma’am!  What the fuck?  What the fuck is that?”

           “What the fuck is what, First Sergeant?”  Nina asked smoothly as she grabbed a stack of papers from the personnel NCO’s desk and glanced at the slides one of the LTs would be briefing next week after she departed.

           “On your fuckin’ finger, ma’am!”  She gestured wildly.

           “Oh shit,” muttered one of the sergeants as her staff NCOs began to bleed out the front door.  Nina gave them a cheery grin as they departed and turned to face the wrath of her First Sergeant.

           “It’s a wedding ring.”
