FOOLISH
I won’t spoil you if you aren’t done with the series, but do you have a favorite Our Flag Means Death character? Obviously Stede and Blackbeard are terrific, but to me the minor characters absolutely shine. In particular I love Lucius, Buttons, Jim, Frenchie, and Spanish Jackie. I had no idea she was played by Leslie Jones!
Who’s your favorite?
Also I love you 😘❤️💕
My favorite is Blackbeard. I have a really strong attachment to the fact that we have no direct information about Stede's character (except that he's British) and he's basically only mentioned once, and then only via "the captain of our ship was Stede." (I don't even have a real idea of what he was like – I just want a ship with that character.) That sounds lame, but he's so cool that I can overlook it. Also, the fact that he wears a huge hat seems cool.
Buttons is cool too, and I'm really glad he was included. The fact that he's basically a human-sized robot is kind of funny, but he is a robot, and robots are cool. I like the fact that we get a lot of information from him but only ever through speech bubbles from him.
I guess the character I'm most attached to, though, would be Spanish Jackie. She has that great, mysterious aura about her. We get very little information about her backstory, or what she was doing on the island (even though we do spend a great deal of time there). In fact, when we talk about her, we talk about her like she is this person who exists in this little bubble of the world she lives in – like a mysterious alien being, a fairy tale.
Anyway, my big attachment to her is that I've really long wanted to be someone like that, where I could be this person living this isolated life doing cool things, but there was something about her I really liked.
Are you still in school to be a dermatologist? I was wondering what got you into dermatology.
Yes I'm in school to become a dermatologist. (I'm actually the first person in the family to get through medical school – my parents went through undergrad to get dental degrees, then got their M.D.s to work as doctors, and one of my brothers is a psychiatrist now.)
I really liked the biology coursework as an undergrad – skin is so interesting because you basically don't have to know anything about it and yet it has tons of different, surprising and amazing structures. And it seemed to be a great way to learn how to do things in medicine in general, since dermatology is just (in theory) a bunch of different diseases you can apply basic scientific knowledge to.
Happy birthday! I’m glad you exist
thank you!!! ☺️
I think we like Fire and Hemlock for all the same reasons and that’s honestly SUCH a thing to say to someone. The first time I found your blog was when I was citing it in my thesis and I scrolled through all your F&H posts going “oh no, oh no… someone gets it.”
ahhh oh this is delightful!!! i LOVE sharing the literary meta braincell, especially over DWJ’s work, and i remember being so impressed you were writing about F&H for your thesis!! i hope all that went splendidly well and that your academic travails have passed!
