I think a good way to flesh out characters it to see what their schema on various things are. Pick a few fairly uncommon but recognizable symbols* (an upside-down cross, an actual Hindu/Buddhist Swastika, alchemical symbols, etc) and think of the first five things your character would think of them. I think this exercise could be a good way to really understand the world your character has been brought up in, and how they perceive it as such.

*They don't need to be symbols per say. They could be something like a house, a baby, a gravestone, etc. Anything that the character would be around every single day, or almost never, would work nicely

My sister snapped a photo of me in a yarn shop in Oregon. The main store had a lot of yarn, and then they had a whole back room about three times bigger than the main shop with EVEN MORE YARN. Here I am, agonizing over how to spend my souvenir money.
