Prologue • Teen Heart Syndrome

At first it was subtle enough to be overlooked. Few people dwelled on it, even the ones mourning their lost children. Then the cases became more frequent.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest, a condition when the heart abruptly stops beating which causes the halt of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. This condition can happen to people of all ages with no history of heart diseases or complications. It wasn’t something of importance. In fact, most of the earth’s population go their whole life unaware of this condition.
Gradually, no one could ignore the odd phenomenon of teenagers, mainly girls dropping dead because of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. It wasn’t a leading cause of death in children and teens but it became harder to shrug off as a coincidence as minors all over the world were lost to an untimely demise.
It was a phenomenon that could not be explained. You could smile brightly at your child one moment, look them in their eyes full of life. Then when you go to see them in the morning they’re unresponsive in the bed they were peacefully sleeping in when night fell.
Even when a heart stops the world still goes on and traditions are passed on with the faint glow of a miracle.
