for non-humans and their peculiar almost-human feelings, try Sunshine, by Robin McKinley; The Demon's Lexicon trilogy, by Sarah Rees Brennan; War for the Oaks, by Emma Bull; or Those Who Hunt the Night + sequels by Barbara Hambly.

for morally ambiguous teacher/student relationships that are deliciously fulfilled by canon, try Poison Study, by Maria V. Snyder.

for recent YA fantasy that's excitingly different from most of what's on the market, try Chime, by Franny Billingsley; The Replacement, by Brenna Yovannoff; or Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Laini Taylor.
