June is on another run, but this is different. Taking the job from Lord Ukano, she is tasked with finding the young man who stole valuable documents pertaining to the retributions of the Fire Nation before heading to the Earth Kingdom. It is believed that he will be found in Ba Sing Se, where a week-long retreat for Earth Kingdom nobles will be taking place at the esteemed Hotel Peacock.

The only thing she needs is a fake partner who is of nobility to make her arrival look inconspicuous. Good thing Mai's ready to leave her parents' home.

Now amongst the nobles--all of whom can be suspects--June must navigate the scene carefully. With a deadline, Mai's ex Zuko (Prince Pouty), and the mysterious Lady Tori who seems to know more than she should, June must find the documents fast and get paid soon. If only the blooming feelings for the cold-hearted Mai weren't also getting in the way.

mai/june, um assassins? cries how prompt do

On the outside, Mai is passive, but on the inside, her heart is pounding and her blood is roaring in her ears as she prepares for the kill, the edge of her blade teasing her fingertips as her target leans in closer to her. Her target grins at her and takes a sip of his drink, but his motions are sluggish as he sets the glass down and Mai can see the distinct cloudiness of venom in the man’s drink. She curses and bolts, upending her seat and swearing at the laughter ringing through the earpiece she’s wearing, trying to ignore how Jun’s beaten her again… and how Jun’s sultry voice is making her hot under the collar.

I have little to no first-hand experience with boarding schools, but I hoped this turned out okay. For the record, I would like to note that this is an AU and Jun and Mai are the same age in it.

Mai trudged into the dorm room she would be staying in for senior year with a practiced look of apathetic disdain on her face. ‘At least it’s my last year here,’ she thought. ‘I don’t think I could stand this place any longer – it’s so utterly dreary.’

She scowled and flopped back on her bed, wondering who her roommate would be this year. She hoped it wasn’t Ty Lee again. She loved the girl, really, but being in the same room as her for over nine months was asking a lot of Mai’s patience. She was surprised she hadn’t slit Ty Lee’s throat in her sleep during freshman year.

The door to the room swung open and crashed loudly against the inside wall. “Oops,” said a very unapologetic voice as someone walked into the room.

Mai sat up and glanced at the girl who had just stomped in. She assumed this was her roommate for senior year, but she didn’t recognize her. Was she a transfer student, perhaps?

“Yes, I transferred over the summer,” she said, answering Mai’s silent question. At Mai’s surprised look, she laughed. “People have been asking me that all day so I just decided to stop waiting for people to ask and just tell them right off the bat. Name’s Jun, by the way.”

“Mai,” she said flatly, eyeing Jun with a sharp gaze. Jun’s skirt was too short, her blouse had three too many buttons undone, and those boots…

Those boots were definitely not regulation.

“So, what’s your gimmick?” Jun asked, her back to Mai as she unpacked her bag, tossing stuff all over her bed.

“Excuse me?”

“Are you a daddy’s girl? Or are you one of those bored rich girls?” she glanced at Mai for a second. “Definitely the latter.”

Mai frowned, but couldn’t deny it, no matter how distasteful it was to have someone read her so easily. “And what about you? Lemme guess, the rebel without a cause?”

There was a moment of silence as Jun dropped what was in her hands and turned to face Mai. Mai merely smirked at her, glad that she’d gotten under Jun’s skin like Jun had gotten under Mai’s.

But Jun just tipped her head back and burst out laughing. She launched herself to Mai’s bed and took a seat next to her. “You know what? You’re alright,” she said. She flung her arm around Mai’s shoulder and drew Mai closer to her.

Her gaze dropped to Mai’s mouth and she wet her lips. Mai suddenly felt very hot under the collar.

“You and I are gonna have a lot of fun this year, I can tell.”
