Zelda looked out, gripping the windowsill tightly. She felt a pit, wide in her stomach. It was obvious how much the advisors and nobility either cared little for or hated Link, but they'd always just begrudingly let her keep him around.
The abyss causing her stomach to ache fiercely only widened in space once she saw Link's green outline emerge from the thicket of trees. He climbed up and nearly fell back over when he saw her already there. He grinned though and opened the window, stumbling inside. "Hey--" His grin faltered when he saw her expression.
She immediately felt guilty but she swallowed. "You...you can't be here."
Hurt and worry shined in his violet eyes. "What do you mean? Is everything okay?"
"There's been rumours," The princess felt tears well up as she told him quietly.
"I am sorry, Zelda. But cease any relationship you may have with the Hero.”
“Everyone around me whispers of your naivety.”
“And in private, the arrogance of your actions.”
“My father forbids it,” Zelda swallowed again, her throat dry, her fists clenching. “I…I’m sorry, Link.”
Instead of anything she was expecting, he just made a thoughtful noise. “And you’re going to let that stop you?”
“…Well…” Zelda mused. “Do I have a choice?”
He softened and hugged her close. She returned it, wishing to never let him go. “If you think it’s too dangerous…but you can always sneak out,” Link told her.
She laughed wetly. “Look at you, encouraging crimes….”
“It’s not like we haven’t been doing it before,” Link pointed out. “What do you say, princess? I’m not leaving you.”
Her heart warmed. She took his hand, and watched his face grow red with amusement. “Okay. Let’s do it.”
