It's always nice learning that a beverage company uses ingredients that are organic, fair trade, local source, handcrafted, non-GMO, carbon neutral, eco-friendly, etc., ad nauseam. Usually, though, all I really want is just a drink that tastes good and doesn't make me feel like crap afterwards. Maine Root, out of Portland, ME, seems to have achieved a nice balance that satisfies both the palate and the conscience. Personally, cane sugar over HFCS would be enough for me. Maine Root goes way above and beyond, almost comically so, by making sure we know their Mexicane Cola uses "Fair Trade Certified™ Organic Cane Juice" and "carbonated pure water" (as opposed to dirty water?), and that it's most definitely handcrafted. That's all good and fine, but how's it taste? Honestly, it's delicious. At 40g per serving it's a bit heavy on sugar, but it tastes like how I think a cola should. Kind of like Coke but better, simpler, more real, without that chemical after (and during) taste. I'm not sure what flavors and spices make up a traditional "cola" taste, but they got it right with Mexicane Cola. Sweet with just a touch of spice, without tasting like a chem lab. If you try it and decide it's not for you, at least you can feel good knowing that no endangered species were brutally and savagely sacrificed in the process.
