Now that’s a classic Maine view! The Ash point preserve, a small preserve from the Georges River Land Trust. There’s actually little access to oceanfront property in Maine because probably more than 95% of the coastline is private property. I’m so grateful there’s a few spots to go that feel wild. I saw five other people there in the three or four hours I spent. All those pretty pictures you see of Maine? You have to pay someone to go to most of those spots, even if it’s just a state or national Park.

"Edge of Winter" - 21x29 in watercolor

Many summers in my youth I climbed Schoodic Mountain. The hike is a wonderful mix of dense forests, peekaboo views of the surrounding landscape, and massive moss covered boulders. And then, when you reach the top, you are rewarded with a 360 view of Downeast Maine. It feels like being on top of the world. We could see the pond we were staying at and the blue mountains of Acadia across the water. We could also see a bog, devoid of trees, cut by straight single road. It was an island of yellows and reds in a sea of blues and greens.

I've never been to that bog. I've found videos and photos of people who have hiked and ridden ATVs there. So this painting, is really of a place I've never been. It's an imagining of what it could look like. And really, it's an ode to Downeast Maine, the place were I learned to love the rocks, the stars, and the mountains. I hope to go back someday soon. ❤️
