Alright, I finally got around to making my top 100 releases of 2023 list. Top 5 or so is definitive. The order gets more and more loose as the list goes on (if you swap placement 90 with 86, it ain't changing much for me). Mostly death and black metal, but a few non-metal releases trickled in here.
Just when I thought I was being a good, frugal boy, the mailman brings me all these records. Black Oath, Majesties, Blackbraid, and Frozen Soul.
My natural physical reaction to music comes from a lifetime of punk and metal shows. Any music. When Lucy Dacus says "hummingbirds" in this song, I'm ready to go fuckin apeshit.
Just headbanging and jumping around my kitchen to very soft music while I'm trying to do the dishes. I don't understand it, either. Fun tho
MAJESTIES - In Yearning, Alive (From 'Vast Reaches Unclaimed' LP, 2023)
So excited for the @yoiroyaltyzine! Here’s my preview, featuring His Majesty, King Victor, and Yuuri, his shy but sweet royal gardener:
✿✿✿✿✿
Yuuri likes his flowers frosted.
It’s an odd thing, Victor notes. His kingdom is icy enough as it is; past gardeners have usually gone out of their way to melt the snow off his blooms. But Yuuri only seems to encourage it, swiping his fingers along the rims of daffodils as he walks the rows, a pretty smile playing at his lips.
Victor follows after—not at all furtive—and admires the handiwork: the meticulous geometric patterns lain along the petals.
But when he tries to compliment Yuuri, the man merely sputters and finds an excuse to scamper away under the guise of “getting back to work,” scrubbing at the various shades of blue that somehow always seem to stain his cheeks.
The majesties of
our fractals can be harder
to see from within.
