So, since starting my instructor job I dropped off on working on Essence and Dodger Cube as expected — but I actually have been revisiting my old game from 2020. It's the first game I started (not just mine though, @anaynay helped a bit and I really appreciate it!), and I wrote it off under the idea that one's first game is never good, and also stopped working on it when I got stuck on not being motivated to make environment and creature assets.
But I recently realized the game's actually pretty good and I can unblock myself by using some free low-poly assets from the Unity store. That's going well! This clip isn't about that though.
In this clip I finally implemented my scarf dressing room :) Along the course of the game there will be secret harder-to-find passages where players can collect scarves beyond the default blue one.
Hello all! We hope you’ve had a great holiday season. As mentioned previously, some important stuff has happened behind the scenes so we made this post to address the biggest changes. More under the cut.
Zine Status
The deadline for the first batch of artworks has passed. 18/27 artists have submitted their finished works and extensions have been given to the remaining 9.
Mod Cham’s Absence
Mod Cham is currently on break to focus on her mental health. She has logged off all her social medias but we do manage to keep in touch and don’t worry! She’s doing alright.
Nothing major is impacted zine-wise, we will still continue operations and Cham’s pieces will still continue to remain in the zine.
Introducing Mod Hallu!
With one Mod down, we needed an extra hand. Luckily, @hallucxnatingblog is able to step in to assist us with running the zine! She’s doing a rather fabulous job so far, we dare say.
Zoe’s Exit
After some lengthy discussions, Zoe has decided to formally leave the zine. This means we’ll be pulling her artwork and name from the Contributor’s List and the official Zine as per her request.
This is mainly due to personal reasons but we can assure everyone that our relations aren’t restrained at all and we still do, in fact, keep in touch! If you wish, you can view her official statement on the matter on her Instagram profile.
The Zine Money
This matter is incredibly important to us and should be to our viewers as well so we aim to remain as transparent with this as possible. This is especially so since we’ve gotten quite a fair amount of questions about it.
We understand that this project is in a certain legal grey by being for-profit. While we do want to support our artists financially as much as we do emotionally, we also have to address this issue. So after some really long discussions, we’ve decided we want to try and strike a balance. We feel artists should be fairly compensated but at the same time, we can also do a lil’ good for society!
If the zine ends up generating a certain amount, we’ll split a percentage of it equally amongst all our contributors such that it’s fair and donate the rest to a charity of their choice.
If the zine generates too small an amount of money when split with everyone, we’ll donate everything to charity!
At the end of the day, our drive isn’t money. We started this project because we wanted to pay tribute to a show we all enjoyed seeing as how this coming season is it’s very last. If you still wish to support us after this, we greatly appreciate it.
Thank you all so much for your patience!
Sincerely, The Fanzine Crew ♥
I feel the last week or slow progress has been a little slow just because in real life I lost a little motivation due to real life circumstances. But now that I’m working on the actual animatronics and not just objects (especially drawing the same object again and again from different angles due to animation) I feel reinvigorated as drawing the animatronics themselves is genuinely fun.
Over all, I have the main room all done in terms of art work. I could still keep working on it due to perfectionism, but I need to move on. I haven’t done any of the camera shots yet, but I’m not as worried with those as they don’t require any animation and such. Plus I’m relieving myself of the anti-aliasing and minute refinement in those shots as I believe it won’t be as noticeable due to the camera filter I will apply to those shots.
There are minigames during the days (not the Atari style though as one would assume, it’s more like quick point-and-click collecting) which are coded but the artwork isn’t done yet (which also doesn’t require animation). And even some cutscenes I’ve still yet to do. But the cutscenes will be done in a way where it’s the camera panning over still shots so they won’t require animation either LOL.
It’s difficult to say in terms of percentage though how much I’ve completed, as it’s my first game so I can’t predict based on experience how much the rest of the game will take. I can say though that this game still has a lot to go unfortunately due to simply tedious pixel art. But right now just aiming for a demo is good motivation. The animatronics and minigames coming later nights can wait, which is a major relief.
I can say though, that I got this idea around Christmas 2017. That’s the very start of it and this is what I’ve completed since then. And most of January was the planning for the game. I drew concept art of everything because I knew the final pixel art would take the most time so knowing exactly what I wanted would cut down time. February was the start of coding, which started off rough because I was learning GameMaker as I went. But now I’ve gotten in a rhythm with it’s programming so it’s much more fluent. March I started the artwork, and the rest has been posted periodically on this blog!
I hope me being specific isn’t a bother, I feel like I have a lot to say on this matter LOL.
I haven’t forgotten about my comics, but I’m focusing on game dev right now, including posting regular screenshots here!
(This is a pinned post, go here for the longer version with images!)
Sometimes I think, "gosh, I post so many different things to Tumblr (game dev, photography, poetry, theology, culture, thoughts about making art, commentary on others' art, jokes/funny reblogs, random thoughts, comments about Tumblr itself), why does anyone follow me?" Given that it's obvious I have at least few followers who are genuinely interested in specific things that are maybe 10% of my posts.
Perhaps this is the outcome of the facts that Tumblr is my only social media and I can never keep one interest at the top of my priorities long enough to maintain a consistent sideblog. This is where everything goes, right? What did I expect?
But actually, there is a theme to my posts—I’m inspired artistically by beauty, mystery, and awe and also heartbreak, consolation, and belonging, and my posts are mostly (1) things that inspire me, (2) my art (the output of that inspiration) and (3) my thoughts on that inspiration and other people’s art—
—and my senior year of college (9 years ago now) there was this idea I lacked a word for which I actually thought of as the thing I post on Tumblr—I think the word is awe—or maybe the mysterious or quiddity or longing (I don’t know!)—but it was easier for me to call it “what I post on Tumblr” than to figure out the actual word for it. At any rate, the topic was whatever it is that most inspires me artistically—same as today.
And yet I feel self-conscious that my Tumblr nowadays doesn’t look like it has any consistency at all. The biggest change since college is that I browse and reblog far more than I used to. Reblogging is good Tumblr etiquette, but I think it’s the biggest reason my Tumblr feels diluted, to me, personally, which is why I’m trying out a queue system to rate-limit my reblogs.
I’ve actually never been intentional about my Tumblr having a consistent theme (in college it just felt like it did by itself), but I’m thinking about being more intentional. I’d like my Tumblr to be a little personal Books & Culture (commentary on/showcase of others’ art) crossed with a zine of my own art—maybe dial into the “inspiration, art, and thoughts” categories. In theory, this idea sounds very exciting to me. I’d still reblog my favorites of other peoples’ art, but I’d have a very high bar for reblogging something silly, for example.
On the other hand, is this really the right medium for being serious? It is Tumblr.
