Europeans in the heatwave have my sincere sympathy—I live in Maine, one of the most northern/generally cool states in the US, and when we have unusual heat it’s miserable. You aren’t exaggerating at all!

Being located in France, we have mixed conditions in terms of temperature and climate, but summers are becoming increasingly difficult. The north (even the south) or every shouldn’t be reaching 45 degrees – no, there’s nothing good or normal about that. And for me, this heatwave marks the moment when we officially tip over into a radical change; it’s a wake-up call telling us: we REALLY need to finally wake up and take action. Reading that ‘this heatwave will be the coolest compared to the next one’ is truly worrying for the years to come.

Most European countries are not at all equipped or, more importantly, adapted to cope with heatwaves, especially ones reaching 45 degrees. Everything dies – EVERYTHING. No one can live like that, not even nature.

In the early 80s my dad owned a dressy outfit that was a bright yellow suit, referred to as a “banana suit.” I think everyone should just be thankful the costumers went with one of the more subdued 70s/80s formalwear options XD

the weirdest part to me is that a lot of people who hated the show seemed to like Classic Loki just fine--you know, the guy who 100% had the most ridiculous costume. and sure, even show antis are not a monolith, so I don't know if it's the same people giving Classic Loki a pass while fussing about Loki's historically accurate frilly shirt, but it still seems KINDA SILLY

and also yes, it could have been much worse. as I understand it, pink tuxedos were also an option in the 80s. for Loki specifically, a bright yellow or bright green suit kinda would have been more on theme, so yes, I think we should all be thankful.

Thoughts on Thor’s use of the word “sacrament” in TDW? I know that it wouldn’t mean quite the same thing in Asgard as it means in Christian theology, and so I’m wondering what it *does* mean in Asgard.

To me, that indicated a kind of loose translation of the Scandinavian Viking tradition of a warfaring life not as a thing of senseless shameful violence, but as a thing of great virtue once applied using the appropriate rules of honorable combat (after all, Valhalla is the highest heaven of the Vikings, and it is a banquet hall for great warriors). Thor may actually believe that, in offering Loki an opportunity to fight and vanquish their mother’s killer, he is providing Loki the opportunity to gain access to Valhalla, where Frigga now resides. Therefore, he is offering Loki the chance to perform a true sacrament, and re-induct himself into the House of Odin.  He also knows Loki was forced to miss Frigga’s funeral and never say goodbye.  He’s giving Loki a chance to see their mom again. 

Perhaps I’m being too kind to Thor here, but I actually think this tracks because Thor shows his love through action (acts of service, for instance) rather than words, and he still desperately wants to believe “my brother is still in there,” despite his hard-assed claim that “that belief no longer exists to protect you, so if you betray me, I’ll kill you.”  He doesn’t mean that at all. And they both know it. 

So Thor’s hoping Loki will read between the lines and see this as a generous gesture rather than a threat. And, to an extent, Loki does seem to acknowledge the double-entendre.   

The sacrament of revenge is very different to Vikings than to Christians. It is an opportunity to exact justice on behalf of the beloved deceased.  It is in line with rules of conduct on the battlefield and schemas of an afterlife. Thor is offering the opportunity as a gift and a chance at redemption: a chance, even, at figuratively and literally returning Loki to  the family tree from which Odin--by sending him to the literal, physical bowels of Asgard-- erased him.  And frankly Loki, who blames himself for sending Kurse out of the dungeons to ultimately, unbeknownst to him at the time, find Frigga, needs that closure.

What type of kittens are you adopting? (I live with someone who has mild cat allergies, and would like to get a cat in a few years if one can be found that doesn’t bother them).

Siberians! I am getting two. They naturally have lower levels of the protein Fel d1, which is the protein primary responsible for cat allergies. I did a lot of research and apparently three out of 4 people with cat allergies do not react to Siberians. On top of this I am getting allergy shots, and I think that will help too. I expect to still have a mild reaction, but I’m prepared for that adjustment period. I have been on a waiting list since July and my litter was born on Christmas eve!

Have you read any books by Rosemary Sutcliff? She wrote historical fiction (lots about pre-medieval Britain, but with man other settings too) in the second half of the 20th century, and I think you'd enjoy her lack of cynicism and sense of the value of both small and large things and ideas.

I’ve never read any of her other works but it sounds like I need to check them out!

Headcanons for how Loki would react to being quarantined?

Good question! I think Loki would do a number of things: 

- He’d read lots of books and learn new spells and practice becoming the most powerful version of himself he can be, until he runs out of resources (assuming this is on Midgard). 

- After he was finished with that, Loki would then start watching a ton of Netflix. He’d get really invested in Queer Eye,  Gordon Ramsay, and Law and Order SVU. 

- Loki would do at-home yoga Youtube videos and spend a lot of time upside down, because he likes the feeling of standing on his hands.

- He’d built a boat-in-a-bottle, learn how to play Solitaire, and get into scrapbooking. He’d be very protective over his sparkly stickers and half the book would be themed around Loki and Thor being BFFs. (Not that Thor can ever know this.)

- Speaking of Thor, though,  there would be lots of time spent projecting his illusion into Thor’s room, “because I’m not technically violating the quarantine, brother.” He’d follow Thor around and ask lots of irritating questions and basically just really get on Thor’s nerves while Thor is trying to exercise by bench-pressing his bed or something. 

- We can pretend that they’re all living at Avengers compound or the tower (why not?) and Loki would definitely do shit like writing love letters to everyone but signing them with each other’s names, so Steve goes around awkwardly thinking Tony is secretly in love with him, while Tony is kind of flattered and likes that Bruce apparently thinks he’s the bee’s knees, and so on.

Frigga for the character break-down?

How I feel about this character: I don’t have a lot of feelings about her, actually, other than finding her dynamic with the characters around her fascinating, and being weirdly invested in my elaborate headcanons about her backstory. Because we aren’t actually given a lot of her character in and of itself - more in terms of how she relates to the rest of her family. Though I do find that, and specifically the role she plays in the family dysfunction, very interesting.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I mean...I guess Odin? I think their relationship has a lot of potential for exploration, especially post-Ragnarok reveals.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I have a lot of feelings about a relationship between Sif and Frigga, and Frigga mentoring Sif as a young woman and specifically a young warrior. I have all my headcanons about Frigga’s history as a shieldmaiden, and I love thinking about her working with Sif, helping build her strength and confidence.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t know if it’s actually unpopular, but I am of the opinion that while people sometimes portray Frigga as the Good Parent who did nothing wrong, she fucked up too, just in different ways than Odin did. She has her own fault for the dysfunction of the Odinfamily, and I think she escapes that a lot of the time in terms of fandom discussion.

I’ve written about this a few times, but I think the core one is probably that Frigga was most concerned with smoothing over conflict without really addressing the core cause of it. The most important thing was the appearance of unity and tranquility, and that meant smoothing over problems without any inspection of the underlying issues, and in so doing making them (seem) less important or significant than they were.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. Frigga’s fridging was bullshit and I will stand by that. She should’ve survived, at least through to Ragnarok - I would’ve loved to see her face off against Hela. Odin’s dead, Hela’s coming to take over Asgard, and it’s Frigga who is standing in her way. 

If we had to lose her (and I understand, thematically, why all of Thor’s friends had to die), that would’ve been a better way to make that happen, even if other events would’ve been complicated (i.e. everything with Loki).

Still. That’s my thought and I’m sticking with it.
