a childhood memory
“Quite honestly, I don’t know what to do with you two anymore.Morrigan? Philippa?” Tissaia de Vries’ voice is cold as ice, drippingdisapproval. Philippa casts a sideways glance at her friend, who is lookingevery bit as miserable as she herself is feeling. And it had been such a goodidea! “Would either of you like to explain to me what made you think thattrying to sneak out of the school via the window ledge was an acceptable idea?”
Philippa’s hands clench into fists, her expression sullen. IsMorrigan going to tell on her to save her own skin? But then again, such an actof disloyalty may be punishable in and of itself. Best to say nothing, and hoping that Morrigan will do the same, meaning that the punishment islikely going to be shared out equally between them.
“You do realise, I hope, why I cannot let such complete andutter carelessness go without consequence? Philippa, what do you think?”
She answers grudgingly, through clenched teeth. “Because it’s disrespectful?”
“WRONG. Well, of course, a breach of the rules isinherently disrespectful. But more importantly, because it is beyond dangerous. What if you FALL!”
Philippa Eilhart, fourteen years old and thoroughly fed up withhaving to follow the rules, simply can’t help herself. Her posturestraightens, unsettling yellow eyes rise up to meet Tissaia’s, full offrustration and defiance.
“And what if I FLY?”
