Did I ever tell you that last summer as we were making our transition to the west coast, I had a big scare with David?? We had just gotten things moved into his room and the whole family was hanging out downstairs when David said he wanted to get something out of his room. He had been gone a couple minutes when I decided to check on him. When I walked into his room I found him leaning out of an open second-story window saying "Mommy look! I'm outside!" It took .4575 seconds for him to see the fear on my face and come back inside. Oh my goodness did he get a talking to, but I knew it was on me for not thinking to lock the window. I know that stories like these happen to parents every day and they may or may not end the same way. The Big Problem With Nationwide's Super Bowl Ad Response

Nationwide is a for-profit business.

There is nothing wrong with this. The trouble is when businesses try to pretend they are our friends (bae, anyone?).

"The sole purpose of this message was to start a conversation, not sell insurance."

This was a key line from Nationwide's response (<--ad can be viewed here, too) to the negative feedback about their ad. 

I call BS.

Despite what may have been great intentions to start a conversation and keep children safe, they fail to own the truth in what they were really doing. There is nothing wrong with a brand taking up a cause, it's called corporate social responsibility. But unless there's a 501(c)3 attached to your name, you still have to own - or at least not deny - that you're doing what you're doing to sell your product. 

Nationwide's ad was branded. The website is branded. Make no mistake, they are trying to build their brand, and, by extension, sell more insurance. 

Their denial that they have an end game that involves selling insurance just makes me wonder more about the conversation that led them to take on #MakeSafeHappen in the first place.

Wow, people are so worked up over that Nationwide ad.

Like, I get that there are people who have lost kids and it will only cause them to hurt. My heart goes out to those people, and I truly hope they find happiness. I can't imagine what they've gone through.

On the other hand, though, making people who have not lost a child realize that it is VERY EASY to lose a child could prevent such tragedies from happening. Maybe not totally, but it will help. Sure, people are used to the silly, funny, goofy Superbowl commercials, but considering how many peoples' eyes are drawn to the set, it is a perfect time to say "Hey, how childproofed is your household?"

They aren't even selling insurance, which is the real kicker. So many are offended because they think that Nationwide is saying "Hey, get money out of your little moron doing something dangerous because they didn't know better." That's not what is happening at all. The website that Nationwide is advertising has nothing to do with selling anything. It merely provides tips and reminders about what can be dangerous, and the fact that kids can and will get into things, despite all logic pointing to them not being able to.

If you haven't yet, go look at the website, makesafehappen.com. No one should have to bury their child, and that is all Nationwide is trying to prevent. Being confronted by the truth is painful. It sucks. It is something that needs to be thought about, though.
