tbh i’m not gonna pretend like i don’t still think Tati is a sweetheart and deserves respect and love because unless there’s a side to her that’s totally completely opposite to the person we see on camera, i sadly think she’s just a victim of someone who wants to be nice to everyone, which also means giving people second chances who perhaps don’t deserve them.

That being said, how the fuck did she not see collaborating with Jeffree Star having a HUGE backlash??? I mean, HOW could you not see that coming??

I would have been more forgiving of Tati if she hadn’t have tried so hard to defend Jeffree for the Jackie Aina comments because Tati honey, do not defend someone who’s been under fire for racist comments before, just sit back and hope that people forget about that collab cos that was a bad move on her part. Jeffree just attracts attention and drama just by breathing, and Tati as a brand has always been anti-drama and all about the reviews so i don’t know why her PR team thought that collab was a good move in the first place. I do think it’s wrong that she’s being attacked though, i think it’s wrong to attack anyone, call them out sure, block them, stop supporting them, but straight up sending death threats and abuse. No guys, that’s never the answer.

So the backlash to the beauty industry culture of telling women they're ugly and the only way to fix it was with traditional makeup was 'women look good no matter what' and 'women can wear their makeup however they goddamn please' which - reasonable, still some room to grow but the spirit's there.

I say there's room to grow, especially relating to the second part, because the CURRENT makeup industry drama is: YSL releases a line of blushes and SAYS they're for everyone, BUT the base of the blushes is TITANIUM DIOXIDE. One of the WHITEST natural or synthetic pigments we have. I'm not talking beige human skin white - it's paint white. Literally paper white. It's also pretty opaque.

So because YSL apparently didn't actually try the finished formula on black women, they sent these PR kits to influencers with deep skin tones as well as at least one albino woman and a bunch of people in the midrange, and all of them disliked it except for the albino woman and the palest of the white women.

This is because the blush, with it's BRIGHT WHITE base, washes out black women, makes them look ashy, sucks the color out of their face, gives the effect of 'zinc oxide sunscreen residue'. It's cool if you're goth, and want to look like a bloodless vampire, I guess? But even then better products exist, and generally blush is supposed to make you look like you're blushing, i.e that there's blood in your face. So it failed.

BUT because YSL said these shades were for everyone (for some fucking reason they made that the keystone of this campaign) there are a bunch of people in the comment sections trying to tell these women that the blush looks good. It doesn't. It really doesn't. It actually kind of looks shitty on the midrange influencers too. The average Italian family living in Jersey wouldn't be able to wear these after a day at the beach. Many of them noted that. It's white. It's closer to a highlighter for most people than a blush.

It's also fucking bizarre how many people are insisting that because the albino woman (who never encouraged these people to do this and also made a statement calling out YSL) liked it that the black influencers have to like it too, or saying 'inclusivity means the palest colors too' when the issue is not WHO it looks good on in a vacuum, it's that YSL said 'everyone' and then didn't include deeper toned women of color in that sentence! Inclusivity means the deeper tones too, dipshit!!

There seems to be some sentiment that they're just like. Lying? Not wanting to admit it looks good? Need a little encouragement to wear it? But again it fucking doesn't. The influencer knows that. And if the commentors actually listen to WHY the influencer doesn't like it, they'd maybe actually take a closer look at the woman trying to reach them and realize it's turning fucking gray on her skin. She doesn't want to be gray. You trying to be positive isn't going to make her like being gray if that's not what she wanted to be! If she was shy about liking green blush or whatever, THAT is when you break out the 'it looks good!' NOT when she's complaining a product that SAYS it wants to include her is excluding her by making her look ashen instead of flushed and alive, the whole point of blush. They fucked it. They totally beefed it. They could have gotten away with just marketing the line for paler tones, and the exclusion would have sucked, but it wouldn't have stung as badly as saying "everyone (not you)!". It wouldn't have turned into a shitshow.

There's absolutely a factor of racism in this too, although YSL probably didn't mean to make this whole thing a statement art piece. It was a HUGE fight to get away from white bases in blush/makeup in general. Black women couldn't just grab a palette or foundation off the shelf at a drugstore for FUCKING DECADES because all the makeup was geared for white women! Makeup brands didn't give a shit about anyone but the white women. To say 'this makeup was made for you!' and 'this makeup with it's titanium base matches you!' is to erase the progress made in the beauty aisle, where brands like Fenty forced everyone else to step up their game. Now brands have expanded past 'pasty orange' into real shades black women can wear. There are purple blushes that look lovely on black women, because they were tested with black women. They don't have titanium dioxide in them. YSL saying '(well it works for white women so) 🤷 yeah I guess that's everyone' is something to complain about! These women saying 'this product doesn't match the advertising' are doing their fucking job! Why defend YSL instead of the influencers? Why try to gaslight them into thinking the color works on their skin when they can clearly see streaky-as-fuck Titanium dioxide??? FUCK'S SAKE YSL why the FUCK did you think you could get away with that?????
