I went to collect more blackberry bramble, since I love it both as a basket resource and as a neat way to move it away from the fields where I’m trying to grow stuff, and I found more of those young red branches I used for weaving before. I decided they weren’t great for weaving, but they can be used as framing, handles, hoops, extra basket parts. I even made a little strainer by creating a hoop and then sewing a piece of mesh-like fabric onto it:
It only works for very liquidy stuff, but I love how easy it is to clean! I can just run it under the water and it’s done.
So, I’m collecting more of these branches, and then realize I forgot to take any kind of string, so I could tie them up together, and carry them home. I’m annoyed with myself, but then I figure, wait. I’m standing by the edge of a harvested corn field. There’s corn husk everywhere. Because I’m smart, I could make a little cord out of corn husk and use it as a string. And so I did!
Felt so incredibly pleased with myself, I feel like I’m truly adapted to live on this planet, if I can walk thru an empty looking field and find resources and know just how to make whatever I need at the moment, that feels powerful!
Really love bringing home all kinds of wild stuff and making baskets and strainers and whatever else out of it, feels almost like making something from nothing, but it’s not nothing! It’s the nature that is a huge resource if you have any knowledge on how to use it.
