Fereydoun Farrokhzad: An Educated Patriot, An Honest Man, A Queer Showman

Today marks the day, Fereidon Farrokhzad, one of the most known and influential Iranian entertainers, was assassinated by the current Iranian regimen, an open act against human rights and freedom.

He was from a very educated opinionated familiar background and his life story is truly inspirational for many reasons, but for me specifically, his openness when it came to his sexuality is heartwarming and awe-inspiring. Being openly queer at a time homophobia was the theme of his society, he stood honest and brave.

Though he never outright labeled himself anything, in one of his most famous demonstrations of queerness, in a show that took place in Australia, he said: "I lived with a woman for 10 years and I loved her immensely. I am telling you these so that you know that I do not owe you a single cent. But a person's moral courage requires him to stand up like a man and tell people that I believe this. I lived with a man for the next 10 years of my life and I was in love with that man."
