I know people like to dump on Mako when it comes to Makorra, and while he is partially to blame, let's not pretend Korra is totally blameless. When Mako tells a frustrated Korra that Tenzin is just trying to help her become the best avatar she can be, she says "Of course, you take his side" and storms off even though he didn't say anything wrong.

Legend of Korra Rewatch Thoughts Episode 1-3

I'm really enjoying Korra as the protagonist. I like how she both shares similarities with Aang such as both being very fun-loving and thrill-seeking protagonists with a strong sense of justice. But she also contrasts against him since whereas Aang didn't like violence, Korra loves kicking butt and is much more hot-headed. Yet while she may be hot-headed and reckless, she's also pretty clever and resourceful. I like the struggles being set up with her such as having to step up as the Avatar for Republic City along with unlocking air bending.

I LOVE the 1920s aesthetic they went for with Republic City from the giant blimps to the old-school style cars to even having gangsters as minor antagonists. The aesthetic actually makes me wish that the first season used gangsters and triads as the main antagonists instead of Amon (especially with how badly butchered they end up doing the Equalists storyline).

Speaking of which, while I'm still early into my rewatch, it is frustrating to know that the equalist storyline ends up being butchered the way it is because the concept is actually pretty interesting. I could buy the idea of benders viewing themselves as superior to non benders with that resulting in a lot of hostility and prejudice between the two groups.

I can tell that Makko and Bolin are supposed to be the Zuko and Sokka of the series but to mix results. Makko was pretty unlikable in his debut episode with how much of an ass he was to Korra for no real reason (seriously, Zuko was less of an ass even when he was a villain) but at least became more tolerable in episode 3 with it exemplifying how much he cares for his brother. Bolin on the other hand is a lot more likable. While he doesn't have Sokka's dry wit, he's still entertaining due to how energetic and cheerful he is.

You can tell they’re REALLY trying to set up the groundwork for Makkora early on between Korra and Makko not seeing eye to eye, how both stare off into the distance at the end of episode two at the other's home and all their moments in the third episode. Honestly, it probably couldn't have worked if they didn't bother adding in a bunch of unnecessary romance drama.

Mako took a deep breath and exhaled in the mirror, adjusting his robes one last time before turning to face his genie. “How do I look?” He spread his hands and shrugged. “Fantastic!” Bolin grinned. “Just like a prince should. Which reminds me!” He leapt up and spun around in a whirlwind, Mako leaning back and shielding his eyes. When he blinked them open again, in his genie’s usual place was… Bolin, still, disguising himself - if you could call it that - with a mustache and his bodyguard outfit. “You’re coming with me?” Mako raised an eyebrow. He tried his best to remain calm, but internally he was screaming. “What kind of bodyguard would I be if I let you and Princess Korra out without me? What if you were mugged at swordpoint?” He sincerely doubted that either Korra or her polar bear dog Naga would let that happen, but Bolin seemed insistent, so he relented. The pair made their way to the fountain in the center of the palace gardens to wait for Korra to arrive.

She arrived a few minutes later, ‘the royal kids’, as they had been affectionately dubbed, tailing after her. Mako hurriedly stood up and bowed. Korra laughed, but curtseyed back as she was supposed to. “Alright, guys, time for you to take off.” She addressed the kids. “Awww, really?” Meelo crossed his arms. “You’re no fun.” “Guys, leave her alone.” Jinora shot Korra a cheeky glance, which she returned with a warning glare. “I’m sure Korra and Mako have plenty of activities to do without us.” Ikki’s eyes widened and she giggled as Jinora led the younger children back towards the palace. “Kids, amiright?” She joked. The way she laughed and moved so effortlessly with so much grace had Mako mesmerised, and it took a sharp nudge from Bolin for him to form a response. “Ah, yeah.” He managed, only just remembering to put on an air of respectability. Korra looked unconvinced, raising an eyebrow at him, but didn’t comment as they started to wander the gardens in companionable silence. “So, Prince Mako…” She started, joking tone of her voice putting him immediately on edge. “Despite your horrifyingly misogynistic reason for arriving, how are you enjoying it down here?”  “Oh, ah, it’s uhm, lovely.” He managed, choosing to ignore the first comment. “How nice for you to have grown up here.” Korra let out a laugh. “Maybe it seems that way, but it’s not as good when you aren’t allowed to leave without your father making a whole production out of it.” She rolled her eyes, then paused. “But I suppose you’d know about that too, being royalty yourself.”  “Oh, sure, absolutely.” Mako agreed, gesturing towards Bolin, who quickly put on a serious face. “I can never go anywhere without Bolin tailing me.” Korra waved at him with a teasing grin before turning back to Mako. “Parents, huh? They’re so overprotective.” She paused for a moment. “Wanna sneak out?” Mako looked across at her blankly. “Right now? But what about…” He gestured vaguely towards Bolin. Korra paused for a moment, furrowing her brow as she thought, and god, wasn’t she just beautiful? She sized Bolin up once more, and he waved awkwardly. “He can come with us, as long as he doesn’t blab to my father. Make him swear to secrecy.” She grinned, and Mako knew he couldn’t resist doing what she said, even if he wanted to.
