Prescriptions for Kindness
Oh malaria medication. I have never had malaria, nor do I ever want to, but I must say that preventing it comes with its own pains. Having been to the same area as I will be travelling before, I have some experience with Malarone, so I requested this again when I was given the option (I survived it once, only some really crazy dreams worse-for-wear...). However- I got a call from Shopper’s where I filed my prescription, to let me know that the Malarone that I requested, enough for nearly 300 days, would cost about $1000. Yay for unpaid internships, but that was a bit too much. They had called just to check that I really wanted to pay that much, as I no longer have health coverage since I graduated. I requested that they just hold my prescriptions until I could talk with one of them- and when I went in to do so, it was such a great experience! The pharmacist specializes in travel and was able to tell me so much about the two drugs that I was considering, and was willing to let me do a trial of the other to make sure that I could tolerate it- It is only $200 for 8 months, but that $800 in savings means nothing if I cannot function on it >.< I am already connecting with so many kind souls in this journey; it really makes me more confident and excited to do this and experience all that will come my way in the next year.
Malaria Pills
I finially got my Malaria pills today. I went for Malarone because, even though they are the most expensive, they have the fewest side effects and when you leave malaria zones, you only have to take them for 7 days rather than the 24 days you have to do with doxycycline. As i’ll be dipping in and out of malaria zones, this means I have actually saved money.
My other money saver was getting Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride rather than Malarone. It’s the same drug, but Malarone is a brand and so is about 30% more expensive.
Malaria
So I've researched all of the areas I'm going on my trip and have discussed with my pharmacist about where I need to be taking malarial pills. Im not going to get Mefloquine again as it really screwed with my head in Vietnam. Instead I'm going for the more stable Malarone, which is a daily pill and more expensive but has the fewest side effects. My data has come from the NPA (National Pharmacy Association). Sri Lanka - low risk, insect repellant advised India - malarone Bangladesh - malarone Myanmar - malarone Thailand - malarone until Chang Mai, then low risk, insect repellant advised Malaysia - malarone except KL Singapore - low risk, insect repellant advised Indonesia - low risk, insect repellant advised Australia - malaria free New Zealand - malaria free Fiji - malaria free (including kiribati and tonga) Vanuatu - malarone Papua New Guinea - malarone Philippines - low risk, insect repellant advised (unless travelling to Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro and Palawan in which case malarone needed) South Korea - malaria free Japan - malaria free USA - malaria free So all in all, I will need enough Malarone to last me through India, bangladesh, mayanmar, borderlands of thailand, malaysia and papua new guinea. I am guessing that will be 30+10+30+5+15+10 days, so 100 days of pills needed in all. Asda sell malarone at 16 pills for £40, so factoring in the 2 days of medication needed after leaving a malaria zone, that's 106 pills at roughly £265.
