Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse JESSICA JONES SEASON 3 (2019), created by Melissa Rosenberg
Rewatching Jessica Jones and the absolute AUDACITY of Trish and Dorothy to ASSUME that Jessica needs TRISH as a moral compass is mind blowing. Trish, the addict who pushed Jessica into saving Malcolm, which then lead her to Kilgrave because she just couldnt let Jessica live her life?
Trish, who basically told Jessica to piss off and stop mooching off her success and money for college when Jess was trying to look out for her? Trish who ACTIVELY sought out confrontation for a power trip on many occasions? Trish who realized for one second she was wrong and crashed out to soothe her ego? Trish who locked Malcolm in a trunk unconscious to get super powers and was pissed at Jessica for saving her life when the procedure was killing her? Trish who constantly makes comments at others to guilt them about what they should or shouldn't be doing from her high horse? Trish who referred to murdering someone as "taking something from" Jessica? Trish who literally kept looking into the illegal medical stuff even after Jessica told her she wanted to let it go and forget? Trish who doesnt even consult Jessica before admitting that she was close to a super, even though it wouldnt take too much effort to put two and two together, thus OUTING Jessica? Trish who projected onto Jessica so hard after she lost her spleen with the "I know its hard for you to adjust to, me being strong and you being weak."
Her character arc is a total master class in bastardization, right up there with Mariah Dillard/Stokes. In the beginning she seems relatively put together, but the second you apply pressure, the ugly gushes from the cracks in the facade. I have sympathy for her as a victim of her mother, I do, but oh my god bitch how DARE you and your mother treat Jessica like she needs someone to point her in the right direction all the time? And what makes you think you can be that person if you kept getting hooked by your addiction(drugs, combat enhancers, her powers, her burgeoning detective skills, her training) and shoving everyone away?
Jessica may not always do everything right, but Trish didnt point her at kilgrave in season one. She suggested Jessica run. She actively went against Jessica's wishes about her missed 20 days. She actively ignores or badgers Jessica if she doesnt agree with her. Her telling Jessica "you've been super half your life. Not a hero. There's a difference."? Trying to save Trish from herself and Dorothy doesnt count as heroism? Fuck out of here.
I think Trish is jealous of how much of a sense of self Jessica has. I also think she literally ignores how many good things Jessica does and how many bad choices she avoids. Its honestly such a shame. But it makes sense for someone raised the way she was.
Trish is an exceedingly realistic character. I hate her descent in how its just an erratic bullet train. I wanted better for her but she couldnt want better for herself.
what i wouldn't give to learn what the executives and writers had in store for Jessica Jones seasons 4 and 5 – my impression was that all of the NMCU shows were aiming for at least five seasons like the original slate for Cloak and Dagger (and by extension The Runaways. unfortunate that only Agents of SHIELD actually got to it) – because there are a lot of hints in season 3 that i would be so darn interested in exploring.
In episode 1 alone, which was interestingly written by Melissa Rosenberg:
We learn that Jessica hired Gillian. even though she was completely done with Malcolm in S2. She willingly keeps people around now (even though she says Gillian's an asshole)
She's still friends with Vido even if she and Oscar broke things off. Explores her dynamic with kids which is interesting, given the eventual route of her 616 counterpart.
Business is booming, enough that Gillian would say yes to the salary, that they could afford advertising, and that Jessica would need a sliding scale to prioritize cases.
Her hook-up with Erik doesn't actually start until like episode 4 – Malcolm thought Erik was banging Jessica even though it hadn't actually started yet when he made that comment.
She loses her spleen in this too. which forces her to ease up on the booze (arguably, but she stayed overnight in the hospital anyway) – and Trish thought it was caused by Jess being so wasted she didn't see the attack. She didn't see the attack because she wasn't the target in the first place, and compared to past instances she wasn't as wasted as Trish thought she was.
there's also a decent argument in saying Jessica needs Trish. which is fair, we can see why. but it doesn't mean Jessica couldn't fend for herself. All three of them (Jess, Trish, Malcolm) were in pretty good places in the beginning of season 3 considering how things fell apart in season 2 (Trish is arguable because becoming a hero kind of became her new addiction. still)
this season planted some seeds on interrogating Jessica's vices, and what more of a life she could have. Detective Costa tells her straight on in 3x08 that she should have more of a life than just the job, and that he's trying for more (adopting a kid with his husband) which is again significant when compared to her 616 journey. Even in 3x13 Erik offers her booze and she says "I'm gonna have to do this one straight."
From what I can also recall, Luke's cameo in the end was reworked after Luke Cage was cancelled (or was it also when this show was cancelled? sometime then) which meant that the first half of the season, at least, was planned with the idea of having seasons 4 and 5. maybe the idea to put Trish in The Raft was influenced by the cancellation? because personally I think that could've been final season material or something. who knows?
i'm curious as hell. would they try to explore Jessica dealing with sobriety? less hook-ups, having more of a life? and what would that entail? Seems like the way they worked Luke in is a good hint, as in keeping someone in check and stopping them when they get too far. maybe that would've been a way for Jess to come into terms with her choice to turn in Trish. what makes Luke more deserving to not be put into jail with handling Harlem's Paradise by S2 than Trish being a petty vigilante? or, if Trish being put into The Raft was influenced by the cancellation, what would've been the outcome? Supermax? would it be a Hope in season 1 kind of waiting for release type or is it, you know, just dealing with it?
lots of questions over here which i would've been so damn interested to know the answers.
sam wilson and malcolm ducasse i love you

Danny finds out Matt and Co. Got fun shirts for each other. He says this will be team building. A Defenders anniversary game or something. They draw names out of a hat.
Luke gets Matt and decides to have Claire help him pick it out.
Matt had Foggy help him read off the shirts. He knew she would wear it even if he got punched for it at first.
Jess got Danny. She recruited Malcolm to join her so they could do something non officially work related. She refused anymore input after she found the one.
Danny got Luke. Colleen had almost begged to have some input in the decision but was declined. He was the rich boy so who cares anyway. Danny thought it was hilarious.
(Part 1 here)
Karen starts this obviously. She just has to get Frank that shirt. (Which he will begrudgingly wear). So she tells Matt and Foggy. Foggy
Maybe in some other life.
