ooh, the caligula ultimate cut is on kanopy. i've seen the original theatrical version, and it's one of the most compelling failures of a movie, because you can see what it could have been so easily if they'd just been allowed to finish it without bob guccione's interference. so a reediting from recovered footage has the potential to be transformative

and my god, that cast! peter o'toole and malcolm macdowell are compellingly repellent normally, and this movie really lets them lean into that. even in the guccione cut, macdowell is fascinatingly reptilian, i'm stoked to see what a competent editor can make of his performance
