Randomly watched a documentary today about the crash of the Hindenburg, the airship disaster in 1937. I don’t know how I stumbled on it; you know the Internet - rabbit holes abound.

Anyway, it wasn’t just a straight documentary. A significant chunk of it was a drama, acted out so that we the viewers could see into that last flight and see what happened and why. The main character (true historical figure) was Hugo Eckener. He was the head of the Zeppelin Company (and he was known to oppose the Nazi regime). After the Hindenburg disaster he traveled to New Jersey to find out what had happened. It was fascinating for me to watch and learn about it, but I started getting distracted by the actor playing Eckener. It was one of those “where have I seen you” moments.

Finally at one point it hit me: Charlie Gimbert!

Yep, it was Malcolm Tierney. 🙂

It was a great documentary, very well done.

House Of Cards: Episode 2 (BBC, 1990)

"After the silly season comes the conference season. Opposition did rather well this year. Abandoned their usual tactic of squabbling in public and shooting themselves in the foot and had a go at us, in particular the Prime Minister - very unsporting of them."

Really this is some of Davies' best work. He continues to draw on the Shakespearean influences #Even having Francis quote Macbeth in one scene. Richardson too delivers a career best performance. He's such a wonderful snake here #Machiavellian scheming and intricately plotting his every move. The supporting cast are all pitch perfect (including our first glimpse of #Lyon's Pm really starting to crumble and a little more for James Villiers to do as his embarrassment of a brother) but nobody can hold a #Candle to Richardson's magnificent creation of the monstrous magnetic Urquhart.

Happily I think the beeb have repeated it recently; or anyway my dad downloaded it off catch up #Davies provides one of his sharpest and most biting scripts in the process transforming a fairly minor novel by dobbs into a cultural #Powerhouse. Impeccable casting (it's all a bit male heavy but then that does really reflect the political layout of the time). Richardson #Gives a masterclass performance of course but there is much to enjoy elsewhere too: Jeavons as the perfectly serpentine Stamper and #Fletcher channeling Lady Macbeth as Urquhart's wife (indeed I'd forgotten just how much of a pushing influence she is on Francis)
