“Just don’t forget me”
Her words rang out through the hall, and they all had flashbacks to their adventures.
The bard remembered the many hours they stayed up together, her listening to what they had to say. They laughed and cried and drank heavily together, and she always listened. She listened to their stories and songs and gave her advice and praise, and the bard truly felt heard in those dark nights on the road.
The barbarian remembered her quiet wisdom and soft touch as she bandaged her wounds. Whenever the barbarian felt backed into a corner, she was always there to defend and diffuse the situation. The barbarian knew she had a hot temper and often spoke without thinking, and her friend saw this and then saw through the heavy facade she often threw up to protect herself. Where the barbarian was a quick insult and a heavy axe, she was a kind word and an understanding eye.
The wizard remembered her laughter. Her laughter was infectious and loud and brought air to the stuffy wizards heart. The wizard was close lipped and guarded, but her wit and laughter always penetrated those borders. The wizard was consumed with himself and his books and his writing, but she always knew how to pull him from himself.
The three adventurers stood, shocked at the events unfolding. Their friend, someone who saw themself as unessential to their party, was truly the glue that pulled them together. And here she stood, after many years of exploring and overcoming many obstacles, here she stood holding the doors of reality. She had pushed past them all as they argued on who would be the one to close it, for it could only be closed from the inside. The barbarian argued that she was stronger and would surely be the right person to hold it shut, while the wizard reasoned that it took no great feats of strength to hold it, his knowledge would surely come in handy. Not wanting to be left out, the bard volunteered to sacrifice themself, for surely their charisma would serve them against whatever beings lived beyond the door.
She had pushed past them all and crossed the threshold of reality, hands on the door. The bard begged her to come back as the barbarian tried to push past the barrier that had formed around the door. The choice was made, and there was no turning back. The wizard flipped through his book furiously, wracking his brain for the answer, and her words broke through their own attempts to save her.
“Just don’t forget me, okay?”
With one last mournful look at her friends, her friends who she loved and cherished, shut the doors. The hall all at once grew quiet and dark, the door disappearing with it. The barbarian fell from where she was pounding at the door and let out a furious roar of anguish. The bard, openly weeping, fell to their knees next to the barbarian and put their hand on her shoulder. The wizard could only stare forward in shock at where the door once stood, tears streaming down his face.
She was gone. Their friend, who wasn’t particularly extraordinary in any way, save she was kind, was gone. No one would ever know of her sacrifice, but she truly saved the known world. And all because she was kind.
