I’m on mobile so I can’t reply directly but I’ll clarify a bit about Maleficent. Maleficent is a movie that I went in trying to actively enjoy and forgive whatever faults it may have. The movie sensed this and punished me.
The characters don’t have any development or dynamics hardly unless expressed by the narrator, the story progresses at the will of fate rather than by any sort of natural pacing, the only decent acting is by Angelina Jolie and only in the middle of the movie. The apparent tragedy of that portion containing her best acting, as I learned from a bigger Sleeping Beauty fan than I, is that it’s the most polarized from who she was in the original story. The use of CG for all types of fairy except for those weird Ents was really poor and sorta jarring as the integration was poor. There was at least one point when the effects used to sharpen up Maleficent’s face caused them to edit her neck in a really weird unnatural way. Also, she ended up in tight pants at some point and it felt weird because she looked like she belonged in Underworld or something rather than a Disney movie about a fairy witch. I would recommend this movie only as an example of how not to write. The acting wasn’t the worst but it felt like watching stage actors at a renfair more than professional film actors and the film’s score was forgettable in the context of the movie. The worst part of it was the writing and it’s straight up unforgivable. :(
