Since I got sick right near the end of the event, and haven’t been active the last few days, I thought I’d make a post detailing how the night ended for Malia. Last I left off, she was speeding to the church in Derek’s car. Read on, if you’d like; I’ll be responding to starters after this.
Malia tossed Derek’s keys on his nightstand, immediately regretting it as it caused the sleeping figures to stir. Jackson was in her usual spot, breathing heavily, Derek asleep next to him. She figured Jackson needed to be next to Derek more than her tonight; he’d been badly injured, and even though he was recovering, he really wasn’t in great shape. Though she and Derek hadn’t talked in depth about it, she knew there was more going on with the two of them than perhaps either of them were willing to admit, and while that was something she usually liked to give people a hard time about, now was neither the time nor the place to make off-color comments about the nature of their relationship. So, she slowly backed herself out of Derek’s space toward the stairs, then trudged down them as quietly as her heavy feet could carry her.
Mixed feelings swirled around inside her. On one hand, she was glad to have left the loft because it meant getting Jackson to safety. Derek let her drive, and that made her feel very useful. Even after they’d gotten Jackson up to Derek’s bed and stopped the bleeding enough so he could heal, she’d gone back out to the church to see if she could pick anyone else up.
It was during the reconnaissance trip that made her think maybe she’d been better off just staying home... she didn’t even get out of the car on that first trip - Danny and Derek had hoisted Jackson’s body into the car and she’d sped off as soon as the door was closed (she hadn’t even shifted it into park). But when she went back to try and find Ariel... there was a mountain ash barrier, and she was on the outside looking in. She tried fruitlessly to break it a few times, but that was hopeless. She called and texted everyone she’d been communicating with that night, urging them to find a way out, to find her, so she could help, or help get them to safety.
Even if there hadn’t been a mountain ash barrier, there was no way she would have gone inside. She caught a whiff of wolfsbane and the very scent made her sick to her stomach. She felt her heart palpitating again, and immediately decided “there is no way in hell I am going in there.” She cared about a lot of people that were in there, but she couldn’t willingly subject herself to wolfsbane again. She was still having nightmares, still falling asleep in inappropriate places, still crawling into Derek’s bed most nights, crying because of what she was seeing and feeling. And as much as she maybe even loved some of the people in there, she just wasn’t noble enough to risk her mind like that to save them. She wasn’t selfless like Lydia, wasn’t courageous like Kira... she wasn’t brave like Talia, clever like Stiles, or steadfast like Scott. She was just her, and right now, her was a fraction of her normal self.
So, she’d paced back and forth, back and forth, until she’d at least seen all of them - she offered rides, gave hugs, wiped tears, lent her phone... and everyone seemed to be accounted for... everyone except Ariel. She grilled everyone, asking if they’d seen her - strangers, friends, law enforcement - no one seemed to know what had happened to her, where she’d gone.
Once she realized Ariel wasn’t there and no one knew where she was, she decided she’d find her sister on her own. She peeled out of the church parking lot and sped to Ariel’s apartment. She saw Ariel’s car parked in its usual spot, saw a soft light on in the window. She tried calling and texting, but it went straight to voicemail, none of her messages received replies. Malia decided Ariel’s phone was dead but she’d made it home sometime before the shit hit the fan at the party. She knocked several times on the door, but there was no answer. Maybe she was asleep already, and maybe Kai was there with her... in which case she didn’t want to be too intrusive. She knocked a few more times, but nothing. She decided she’d go back to the loft and wait for a response; there weren’t many hours left before daybreak anyway, so she’d come back then. Maybe bring some coffee. Hopefully Ariel liked coffee...
She hopped into bed and tried to sleep, but it was fitful and unfulfilling. The sun rose, and so did she, hoping the new day would bring answers.
