Artists You Need To Know: The Sequel

The article lovesholiday and I wrote- Artists You Need To Know: but may not hear about- got the best reaction that I could’ve hoped for. Very little feels better than finding music I want to keep on repeat. I was moved when I saw that theworldsafire had found good shit by reading our post. I was like... Oh shit... people read that? She told me I should share more new artists “when [I] get a chance.” This post is for her. The disclaimer is that this list isn’t collaborative. Though I’m sure lovesholiday wouldn’t mind doing her own sequel? This is my snapshot of music I’m blessed to have discovered. More artists you need to know- but may not hear about. 1. The Physics

For the past month or so, if you’ve spoken to me for any length of time, I have forced you to listen to The Physics. And you were glad you did. This Seattle born Hip-Hop group is one of the best things I’ve done for my iTunes recently. Their sound is a soulful that’s easy to swallow, but a texture you can still touch. This past weekend I had the pleasure of interviewing Justo and Thig Nat before their performance at Nola’s in Los Angeles. Those write-ups will be coming soon. Until then, I’ll give you my favorite song of theirs and the projects you need to have, but may not know to get. These two are a large part of why I love The Physics. Malice and Mario are responsible for the amazing vocals throughout both projects listed above. Their live vocals blow the recordings out of the water. As I watched The Physics perform, I made sure to show Malice & Mario the same amount of love. After the performance, Malice- probably noting my lousy attempts to sing along- dug a copy of her album- Happy 2 Year- out of her purse to give to me. This is an album Malice and Mario did to commemorate their two year wedding anniversary. I am grateful that they make music on their own. I discovered TiRon and Ayomari for the first time on 2dobeboyz’s Best Projects of 2011. I listened to A Sucker For Pumps after reading a track by track break down on Hip-Hop fiend. In this article, TiRon and Ayomari explain the production of each song on the project. This article changed my entire listening experience. I have since wondered why artists don’t give their listeners more information about their creation process. Their new project, HNGRY, made my personal list of best projects of 2012. My love of A Sucker For Pumps left me with high expectations for HNGRY that were well exceeded. On my own list, I couldn’t leave Oakland out. 1 Of A Kind is a great representation of the artistry brewing in my backyard. 1 O.A.K. lies just beneath the surface of artists you probably already know such as Teedra Moses, Dom Kennedy, and Phonte. While this artist has certainly been nurtured by Oakland, the quality of his craft stretches far beyond these borders. Lucky for listeners, his recent solo project- Special Request- indicates that his intentions with his music go the same distance. One song to listen to features him on the chorus. Speaking of featured artists that outshine. 1 O.A.K. will be opening for Teedra Moses in San Francisco soon, so if you’re in the Bay, you’re in luck. Songs to listen to: Chill (feat. This time we go across the water to San Francisco for another Bay Area shout out. I’m a new comer to Rocky Rivera’s music, but her mixtape, Pop Killer, has been in heavy rotation for me. She’s a rare musical find. You don’t have to choose between style, thought, and talent when you listen to her. She throws aware words on top of refined productions and ultimately raps about everything from love to living conditions in Oakland and San Francisco. My homework lies ahead of me with this artist. I’ll be going back to listen to more of her work. Everything I’ve heard so far assures me that activity will be fruitful.
